Katinka Hesselink - my other lenses

Ranked #2,036 in Squidoo Community, #192,159 overall

A lensography

I'm a lensmaster, webdesigner an oldest child, an eternal student, a former teacher and single.

Most of you know me here on Squidoo as lensmaster 'spirituality' - but I've also got a life outside my interests in spirituality (though perhaps that's not often noticeable). Anyhow on this lens I showcase my non-spiritual lenses and tell you all a bit more about myself.

About Me on Squidoo

Note that the number of lenses here is the number of lenses I currently have ON THIS ACCOUNT. I have two more accounts. Also, these days I buy most of the new lenses that are added to this account. Since I never kept track of how many lenses I made vs bought, I can't tell exactly. However, I do think it's fair to say I probably made over 500 lenses on Squidoo and bought and edited the rest.

Where, When, How

I was born in 1974 in Utrecht, The Netherlands (that's Europe). I was born a month early, so I spent my first weeks in an incubator. We soon moved, after my first brother was born, to Groningen, another town in The Netherlands. My dad got a job there as an assistant professor in mathematics at university.

This is me looking thoughtful, probably on the beach somewhere. Picture taken by my grandmother, probably:

op strand

When I was 7 I got a new baby brother (my second brother). You can see I adored him:

met sieger - 1981 of zo

At about the same age you can see me working in the garden of our Groningen house. Yes, I'm actually wearing wooden shoes. [Can't believe it. I hated those things and would have expected to refuse wearing them]

Katinka in de tuin 6 of zo

And this is me bathing, again looking thoughtful.

in bad

We moved for a year to Austin, Texas in the United States when I was 12 - which is where I learned the basis of my English. I went to Middle School there.

Fascinating read. Goes into the meaning of awareness, artificial intelligence, animal consciousness, drugs etc.

Birthday gifts :)

I got my camera a few years ago now (2008) and love shooting pictures with it. Once I put it in 'easy mode' it really has been very easy to use. Only a few buttons left to get to know.

Small, easy, fun. And the quality of the pictures I'm taking is great.

This year (2009) I got this pen, a few other things as well, but don't you love it too?

In 2010 my brothers gave me this huge book full of Buddhist Goddesses. I'm amazed :) Literally. It was a chore to get home. My parents gave me a much smaller, but harder to digest book with a fascinating title 'Out of This World: Otherworldly Journeys from Gilgamesh to Albert Einstein'. Doesn't that make you wonder?

Former teacher

I have great admiration for anybody who succeeds at teaching teenagers, because I know just how hard it is. Whether you're a poor teacher or a good one - in my book you are still brave and amazing for the ability to survive in there.

These lenses have some relation to that job. The first is to help teens organize their studies. The second: a home school chemistry project that adults might like too.

Eternal Student

I've been in college on and off since high school.

I began as a Chemistry major - but quit because I wasn't getting the grades.

I went on to nursing school, where I failed on the practical side of things.

Then I became a teacher of math and chemistry. This is the first college after High School I actually finished - so I have two bachelors degrees from a teachers college. I tried teaching for three years, but found out that I'm not really cut out for that.

Next I went back to university to study the love of my life: religion and spirituality. I'm still there, hoping to get my BA degree in the summer of 2008.

I didn't get that degree: the writing of the final papers did not go well at all. Taking stock of my financial situation (and what was I doing this for) I quit. That was a huge relief. Turns out I hadn't been enjoying college for a while.

Good causes: Amnesty International and the Environment

I feel it's important to reach out and contribute to a better world. Unfortunately I don't have all that much money to spare. The one good cause I have supported since my first years in college (more than 10 years ago) is Amnesty International.

Very interesting read. Love to hear about the journey of a fellow teacher. (I guess I'll do a lens on it sometime, who knows.) You may not be in a physical classroom, but you sure are in a cyber one. You continue to teach, just in a different platform and you excel at it. P.S. I too was put in an incubator. Did they cover your eyes? Many children have visual problems because they didn't.

I don't know that they covered my eyes, but since I still don't wear glasses (though the time is growing near), I don't think I suffered for it.
