A lensography

I'm a lensmaster, webdesigner an oldest child, an eternal student, a former teacher and single.

Most of you know me here on Squidoo as lensmaster 'spirituality' - but I've also got a life outside my interests in spirituality (though perhaps that's not often noticeable). Anyhow on this lens I showcase my non-spiritual lenses and tell you all a bit more about myself.

Thank you!

These are lensmasters I want to thank for their continued support.

Squidoo lens review is a blog by lensmaster Growwear (aka Mimi) who has featured my lenses repeatedly. So I wanted to thank her by featuring that lens here.

My Thank you Lensmaster blog als has a lens.

My Groups

Lens of the Day (LOTD) ! My lens about my country The Netherlands made it :)

It's the highest honor on squidoo I think - and my lens about The Netherlands (also known as Holland) was named Lens of the Day on January 3rd 2009. I feel blessed.

Some lensographies I'd like you to know about

Giant squid Top 100 Member

In July 2008 I became a giant squid. Half a year later, January 2009, I also got the honor of calling myself a member of the giant squid top 100 club.

The Giant Squids are the elite amongst the lensmasters at squidoo. All of us have made at least 50 quality lenses. Giant squid top 100 members have made over a hundred quality lenses.

In the same month that I became a giant squid top 100 member, I also made lens of the day. There aren't many squidoo honors left :)

As bonus: in months before the announcement I took the challenge on squidu to share our experiences in a thread dedicated to the path of becoming a giant. As a result I got interviewed on the Giant Squid Community Showcase blog.

Becoming a squidoo angel ... and getting a purple star

More squidoo honours

Interviews I've given about squidoo

Mimi, aka Growwear, interviewed me on her (then) new squidoo review blog
She asked things like my passion for squidoo, my most popular lens, and a tip for newbies.

The Giant Squid Community Showcase interviewed me when I'd just become a member of the Giant Squid top 100 club.
They asked me about my lensmaking process, my favorite lenses and a story behind a recent lens.

Where, When, How

I was born in 1974 in Utrecht, The Netherlands (that's Europe). I was born a month early, so I spent my first weeks in an incubator. We soon moved, after my first brother was born, to Groningen, another town in The Netherlands. My dad got a job there as an assistant professor in mathematics at university.

This is me looking thoughtful, probably on the beach somewhere. Picture taken by my grandmother, probably:

When I was 7 I got a new baby brother (my second brother). You can see I adored him:

At about the same age you can see me working in the garden of our Groningen house. Yes, I'm actually wearing wooden shoes. [Can't believe it. I hated those things and would have expected to refuse wearing them]

And this is me bathing, again looking thoughtful.

We moved for a year to Austin, Texas in the United States when I was 12 - which is where I learned the basis of my English. I went to Middle School there.

An introduction into consciousness

Fascinating read. Goes into the meaning of awareness, artificial intelligence, animal consciousness, drugs etc.

Good causes: Amnesty International and the Environment

I feel it's important to reach out and contribute to a better world. Unfortunately I don't have all that much money to spare. The one good cause I have supported since my first years in college (more than 10 years ago) is Amnesty International.

Another lens on the environment (yes, global warming is real): I gathered my favorite environmental lenses here.

The lenses in this category will donate their proceeds to the good causes they are about - if the cause is listed for charity within Squidoo.

Donate to Earth Justice

Environmental law defender Earthjustice, the top American ecological law firm, because the earth needs a good lawyer. Formerly Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund.

We at Squidoo passionately believe in creating new ways to support good causes online. By making a donation to Earthjustice from this page, you are sending money directly to that organization, in whatever amount you want. We don't touch it. We don't even see it. The author of this page doesn't either. And if you made it this far, thanks for caring.

I thought I'd mostly be linking out to my own lenses here - you know, another platform for self promotion. Instead most of what I've written has been about how YOU too can get your lenses found on google (aka SEO).

Birthday gifts :)

I got my camera last week and love shooting pictures with it. Once I put it in 'easy mode' it really has been very easy to use. Only a few buttons left to get to know.

Small, easy, fun. And the quality of the pictures I'm taking is great.

This year I got this pen, a few other things as well, but don't you love it too?

Former teacher

I have great admiration for anybody who succeeds at teaching teenagers, because I know just how hard it is. Whether you're a poor teacher or a good one - in my book you are still brave and amazing for the ability to survive in there.

I'll hopefully be going (back) to India somewhere in the next two years. These are some lenses I've made to get in the spirit of things and mentally prepare myself.

Eternal Student

I've been in college on and off since high school.

I began as a Chemistry major - but quit because I wasn't getting the grades.

I went on to nursing school, where I failed on the practical side of things.

Then I became a teacher of math and chemistry. This is the first college after High School I actually finished - so I have two bachelors degrees from a teachers college. I tried teaching for three years, but found out that I'm not really cut out for that.

Next I went back to university to study the love of my life: religion and spirituality. I'm still there, hoping to get my BA degree in the summer of 2008.

I didn't get that degree: the writing of the final papers did not go well at all. Taking stock of my financial situation (and what was I doing this for) I quit. That was a huge relief. Turns out I hadn't been enjoying college for a while.

Nice to meet you :) Thanks a lot for blessing my lens on crazy gadgets. I was going through a lot of your lenses today to get new ideas... the CSS codes one especially. Very helpful! Thanks a ton.

It's even more nice to know you like India and that you're planning to visit here soon. I love people who like India (not that I hate people who don't). And if you're into Bollywood music, you wouldn't want to miss out on A.R Rahman's tunes. We Indians all adore his music!

Do stay the same!

Cheers

More of me online

If that wasn't enough, you can also follow me on Stumbleupon where I blog on and off about anything that interests me. Or you can just find out about my spiritual interests on my spiritual lensography. I'm also on Myspace.

If you don't know that much about webdesign, myspace or search engine optimization, my website is a good place to start.

My oldest brother: Krijn Peter Hesselink

This lens is in Dutch. It celebrates the career of my oldest brother Krijn Peter who recently had his first book of poems published. He's quite active in the Dutch poetry scene, so his lens features the youtube video's made about him (sometimes also by him).
