Tiny Boats, But Versatile... and Can Go Places Where Other Boats Can't...
The native Alaskans and others from the North Seas of North America - Eskimos, perhaps? -- from prehistoric times were probably the first to devise a boat like a kayak. It probably had a frame of whalebone, with whale or walrus skins to provide the hull and covering. These boats were "workboats" and used for fishing and capturing and harvesting small marine mammals such as seals, small sea lions, small walruses, and even small whales, which would then be brought back to camp to provide food. Obviously, for the bigger marine mammals, the hunt would be a group effort of many in kayaks to help corner, kill, and bring back the catch. The whole village would participate in preparing the catch for later meals.
Now, however, most kayakers are recreational kayakers--either down slow-moving rivers or white-water rapids or in the open ocean. Kayakers can be found seemingly wherever there may be water deep enough for them to float through--and that isn't much--maybe a foot of water is sufficient for a kayaker to manuever in.
This Squidoo lens will give you more information and links on this interesting new sport and way to find adventure.

Kayaks - There Are Lots of Places Where You Can Rent Them or Learn How to Use Them!
There are different kinds of kayaks.
Those used in cooler waters and the frigid waters of the North - such as those used near the Aleutian Islands and near the North Pole - have enclosed shells in which the kayaker(s) can keep their legs covered and to prevent water from swamping the craft. The kayaks of this configuration enable the kayaker to capsize, flip-over, and then right themselves - there is a technique for this that requires some training to get good at it.
Those used in the tropics tend to be more like deep, hollowed out surfboards, on which the kayakers basically sit in the depression and are exposed more to the water. These boats aren't made to prevent swamping or to allow flipping all the way over while the kayakers remain inside.
In either case, you can have a lot of fun with these boats.
However, as with all boating activities, you should have some safety training and handling training before taking these boats out on open water. It's also good to use a "buddy system" when you go boating in kayaks - so you can get help if you get in trouble.

- Very nicely done! Your lens makes me miss my kayaking days in the bays of the Gulf of Mexico. I'm not too much into the white water, but I do love most other types of kayaking. Enjoyed your lens!
