Kay Yow Is Famous for Her Multiple Contributions to Women's Basketball, Her Strong Faith and Her Remarkable 3 Time Fight Against Cancer

December 14, 2008 will mark Kay Yow's 1000th game coaching the North Carolina State University Wolfpack Women. She has won almost 700 of them.

That by itself would be amazing and remarkable. But it is really just a small part of the Kay Yow story. It is one small piece of what makes her such a treasured person in Raleigh, North Carolina.

"Yow received her Bachelor of Science degree in English from East Carolina University in 1964, and her Master's degree in Physical Education from the UNC-Greensboro in 1970. She was selected the "Outstanding Alumnus" by UNC-Greensboro in 1982 for excellence in her profession[citation needed]. On January 11, 2001, she reached the 600-win milestone for her career with a 71-64 win over Temple University.[1] . On February 5, 2007, she reached the 700-win milestone for her career with a 68-51 win over Florida State University. She currently ranks as the fifth winningest active NCAA Division I women's basketball coach. In recognition for her dedication and success, Yow was selected for enshrinement into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on June 5, 2002. On February 16, 2007,the basketball court at Reynolds Coliseum was renamed Kay Yow Court at Reynolds Coliseum in her honor. On July 11, 2007, Yow received the inaugural Jimmy V ESPY Award for Perseverance. She received a standing ovation."

Kay Yow A more complete list of her accomplishments is at the bottom of the lens

In the middle of all of this she has waged three battles with breast cancer, her work with Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund in partnership with the V Foundantion for Cancer Research, her inspiring speeches and her life as a citizen, faithful Christian and one of three sisters prominent in athletics.

What Do You Know About Kay Yow?

The Daughters of Hilton and Elizabeth Yow

Hilton and Elizabeth Yow of Gibsonville, North Carolina must have been amazing people. They raised three daughters (and a son) at a time when girls weren't supposed to be athletes. Yet they raised three daughters who have risen to prominence in a sport that barely existed for girls when their girls were young. How did they do it?

Coach Yow's sister Deborah is currently athletic director at the University of Maryland, one of the few women in this position at a Class A university.

Sister Susan has coached at the college level at UNC, Wilmington, Kansas State, Drake in Iowa, East Tenn. and Providence College. She has assisted WNBA teams the Charlotte Sting and the Cleveland Rockers.

Wolfpack Wears Pink to Fight Cancer in Honor of Coach Kay Yow

Kay Yow Is Mourned, but Still Victorious

Kay Yow fought her last on January 24, 2009, when at the age of 66, she died of breast cancer. Coach Yow had coached up until 3 weeks ago, when she stopped for the season, because she didn't have the energy that the team deserved.

She had been battling breast cancer for over 20 years. She had three separate bouts. Among her many basketball accomplishments is the work she did for raising money for breast cancer research and being a role model for other women.

The Excitement of the Game

I had a friend from New Zealand to one of the games. He was a lovely guy, very macho. He loved the game! He loved the hoopla and the way the team played.

He stated, "This is the most exciting athletic contest I have seen!"

Here we have

1. Coach Yow being acknowledged for coaching her 1000th game at State.

2. The cheerleaders bringing the team in with the howling of the wolf.

3. Coach Yow thanking the fans, the sixth player, the cheerleaders, the band and the dancers. This is something she does each and every game!

Wonderful Books and Movie About Women's Basketball

I especially recommend In These Girls Hope Is a Muscle and Counting Coup. Both are true stories of two girls high school basketball teams, from Massachusetts and Wyoming, who fought for their state championships. There circumstances were very different, but both stories are powerful representations of basketball and what it can do for adolescent girls. They are good for people who don't even care about basketball, but do care about girls
