Tips for beginners from a beginner
In May 2008 I bought a bow. I'd been hunting deer with a rifle for 13 years and hadn't yet tried bow hunting. My boyfriend was into it and willing to show me the ropes.
This lens is an archive of the equipment I've used, techniques I've learned, useful websites I've found, and my personal progression.

My target practice track record
I take a lot of photos when I'm shooting so I can see how I've progressed as far as grouping my shots and adjusting my sights.

I USE: Bowtech's Diamond Edge
I ended up buying the first, and only, bow I tried out. BowTech's Diamond "The Edge." It's a ladies/youth bow that adjusts in the 40-55# range and up to 29".
It is reasonably priced for a beginner's bow and has a decent resale value. It features an attached quiver and the popular Mossy Oak Camo finish.
It's also available for lefties.

How to select a bow
When choosing a bow to use for target practice or hunting, [good] dealers recommend first looking for something in your weight and draw length range, and testing a few to see what feels good. Buying based on manufacturer and brand won't guarantee a good fit.
- Compound Bow Selection
- This site has a great photo of a compound bow with labels for all the parts. There are 24 features on this article that will help you decide which combination of features are most appropriate for your body size and type and hunting or practice style.
- How to fit your bow and arrows
- This article sends you through a process of selecting your bow and arrows based on hand dominance, strength, and body size.
- How to choose your own bow
- This site goes beyond selecting a bow, into articles on making arrows, setting your string, tips for beginners, and more.
I USE: Carbon Arrows
I started out with carbon arrows, so I don't have anything to compare them to, but I hear that they are the IN thing that pros are starting to switch to.

- Learn the differences between carbon arrows that make or break (or don't change) your shooting strategy.
I USE: RipCord drop away arrow rest
After testing a bow with a basic drop away rest, I splurged on the RipCord arrow rest with padded rest. This is especially great for beginners because the arrow can't fall off the rest. It sits in a well that you snap up before you draw back, and a bar across the top prevents it from falling out the top of the well. This allows you to develop your draw form without worrying about where your arrow is. The padded rest and bar cut down on noise in the stand.
The RipCord is a bit of an investment but if you're an avid hunter or plan to be, it's worth it.

I USE: A hard case for my bow
While soft, zip-up cases are inexpensive and pretty, hard cases do a better job of protecting your bow from bumps and drops. It doesn't take much for your kids to kick your bow out of whack when it's thrown in the back seat of the car, or get squished with your decoys in the trunk.

I USE: a four-sided target bag
My four-sided target bag is made from foam wrapped in cardboard, with a plastic mesh cover. They're supposed to last "forever," and the cover is quite self sealing.
Target blocks and bags come in a huge variety of shapes, sizes, and styles, in every price range from $40 up.

- Greetings from a fellow female hunter! I've been hunting far & wide on Squidoo & you're the first I've found, other than me, myself & I....(and we were just about to give up)! I am most likely more than double your age, but I hunt with both bow & gun & love it! At 63, my muscles are not what they once were & I only pull 38 pounds, but I've managed to add 8 deer to our freezer in the 10 years I've been a huntress...just wanted to say hello & congratulate you on your wonderful career with Squidoo & Cafe Press! I'm learning much by reading your prolific list of lenses! I have a gallery on Zazzle & found Squidoo while trying to market that...now I love Squidoo so much - I don't have a minute for Zazzle! What do you do - stay up all night making lenses? I find there aren't enough minutes in a day to do all I want to do online - my behind has grown a flat spot from all the hours!!!
Gotta run - all the best & God bless you, Kimberly!
