Keep A Gratitude Journal!

Give Thanks - Develop a Positive Attitude!

I talked a little bit about keeping a gratitude journal in my lens about college and depression, but it's been such a helpful practice for me that I decided to make a whole lens about it! Looking for the little blessings in each day will do wonders for anyone's attitude - it certainly has for mine! It becomes a habit to focus on the positive instead of the negative, which, over time will make you feel so much happier and at peace in general.

How To Keep A Gratitude Journal

Night Sky by Dave YoungStep 1. Get a journal. Any notebook will do, whether it's a college ruled note pad, a fancy journal or a guided gratitude journal.

Step 2. Set aside time. Decide when you'll practice your new habit and carve out the time to do it. I like writing before I go to sleep - it's a perfect time to reflect on the day and drift off with positive, grateful thoughts.

Step 3. Make it a habit! Set an alarm on your cell phone or leave yourself a note so you'll remember to write in your journal. It will become a habit eventually, but until then you may need a reminder!

Step 4. Keep up with it. Some days will go badly and you might not feel like you have anything to write, but remember - THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING TO BE GRATEFUL FOR!! Isn't that wonderful??? Even if it's the clothes on your back or the food you ate that day, there is always something.

Step 5. Enjoy your refreshed, more positive attitude! Spread it to others!

Quotes about Positivity and Gratitude

Beautiful Flowers - Image by AussieGall"If you concentrate on finding whatever is good in every situation, you will discover that your life will suddenly be filled with gratitude, a feeling that nurtures the soul."--Rabbi Harold Kushner

"I am often surprised when I think to count my graces, for the more I count, the more there seem to be. And if pride in my accomplishments is the emotion that I naturally feel when I focus on my gifts, gratitude is the emotion I feel as I become aware of the many graces that have shaped me and my gifts."--Susan Wittig Albert

"Joy is the simplest form of gratitude." --Karl Barth

"Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation." -- Brian Tracy

"Just as millions of snowflakes pile up to create a blanket of snow, the 'thank you's' we say pile up and fall gently upon one another until, in our hearts and minds, we are adrift in gratitude." --Daphne Rose Kingman

"Gratitude is the heart's memory." --French Proverb

"Gratitude is a lens that sharpens our ability to see the gifts and the graces of our lives as more real than the material world to which we are often tethered. Gratitude energizes us for living more fully in the middle of the life we have been given as we become more practiced at finding God there."-Ruth Barton

"You simply will not be the same person two months from now after consciously giving thanks each day for the abundance that exists in your life. And you will have set in motion an ancient spiritual law: the more you have and are grateful for, the more will be given you." --Sarah Ban Breathnach

"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow." --Melody Beattie

"We ought to give thanks for all fortune: it is good, because it is good, if bad, because it works in us patience, humility and the contempt of this world and the hope of our eternal country" --C.S. Lewis

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."--John Fitzgerald Kennedy

"True thanksgiving means that we need to thank God for what He has done for us, and not to tell Him what we have done for Him." --George R. Hendrick

"When you arise in the morning, give thanks for the morning light, for your life and strength. Give thanks for your food, and the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies with yourself." -Tecumseh

Any Journal Will Do!

You can use a beautiful, fancy journal for your daily record of gratitude - or just grab any old notebook you have lying around. The point is that you think about what you're thankful for and look for the little blessings in each day. I personally like using pretty notebooks for all of my journalling - it's just more fun - another thing to be grateful for! Moleskine notebooks are my number 1 favorite but there is an endless selection of different kinds of journals, so anyone can find something that fits their style.

What are you grateful for today?

Give thanks right here, right now! What blessings have you received today?

Right now, I am grateful that God has chosen me to be in charge of a Ministry that is about His business and sharing Christ with others in a way that isn't preachy. I am grateful to be alive and that I am not the same person I was 10 years ago and I continue to grow. I am grateful that I can help others through my own experiences. Great lens. God bless you.

Guided Gratitude Journals

Maybe you would rather have a guided gratitude journal that already has prompts and questions inside. If so, you're in luck because there are so many available! These are some of my favorites.
