An important goal I have is to protect not only my children but others
When they first came out with the State registries for Sex offenders we as parents felt secure in the knowledge that if we knew where offenders lived we could protect our children. Unfortunately that was a false sense of security. What is not common knowledge is the fact that between 50%-75% of Registered sex offenders will never be on that state registry. In order to be listed the crime has to be within the confines of Megans Law. You see all around how towns and cities want to enact ordinances preventing offenders from living 1000 ft around schools or parks. What you don't realize is if the offender is a parent with children in the school as well as a taxpayer, the town or city cannot prevent that person from entering the school for conferences, performances etc..... Most law enforcement agencies cannot by law notify school administrators of these parents due to privacy issues. So the very place we feel our kids are safe could be a place where they are actually at risk. With the help of my local state legislators we are trying to get a bill passed through legislature that will provide communications between the police and schools as well as allow schools to inact a Memorandum of understanding between the offender/parent and the school with guidelines on when that person can enter the school. The fine line is to make sure the children of the offender do not get hurt or ostracized as they are the innocents. Please check with your school or police department and if there are no safety nets in place, call your legislators to act.
