Strengthening your Brain Power
Although your brain is actually an organ not a muscle, mental exercise does strengthen it. Whether it is reading, learning a new skill or language or playing games that test your mental acuity your brain will become stronger and more proficient. Even as we age we should do things that keep us in a constant learning mode.

Depression and brain power
Depression in the elderly can also present a problem to your brain's capacity to function at it's full level. Successfully treating depression can help you on so many levels.
Alcohol and its damaging effect on the brain
As you can imagine alcohol is bad for the brain no matter what age you are. If you are trying to stay mentally sharp then you might want to forget about the booze. Alcohol use, especially in alcoholics, shrinks the brain's volume and affects the ability to function. Sadly the effects of alcohol might linger long after the alcoholic has become sober.
