Keeping the Magic alive- long after your trip to Walt Disney World

Keeping the Magic of Walt Disney World Alive

If you're reading this lens, chances are that you've been to Walt Disney World and want to go back.  Maybe you're planning your next trip, or are unable to return soon enough and are looking for a "Chicken Soup for the Disney Soul" kind of experience.

Well, you could fill multiple websites with that kind of information and experiences, and this is a single lens.  But I hope to give you enough of a springboard to find the special combination that works for you.

Remembering Disney World

The High Tech Way

Welcome to the new world, folks! Smart phones and social media pretty much rule the world. Not that that's a bad thing! Check out these apps, sites, and whatnot to bring the magic of Disney World into your pocket.
  • Have Disney World Text You- Disney is doing a new thing, and I don't know if it will continue or not, but for now, you can text SPRING11 to DPARK (37275) and Disney World will text you with "the latest information, tips and real time updates while you are here.". After confirming twice, anyway. They assure you that you will get no more than 8 texts per day, and while I haven't gotten a text yet, from someone else's experience, it looks like a lot less than 8. Nevertheless- Disney World texts you!
  • Walt Disney World on FaceBook- http://www.facebook.com/WaltDisneyWorld They have updates, a calendar of events, photos and more.
  • Walt Disney World on Twitter Actually, Disney World has several Twitter accounts, but http://twitter.com/#!/todayatwdw is especially for current park visitors (and dreamers). I really like this account, because it looks like Disney's finally mastered the art of using hashtags. I so want that job.
  • Disney World's Mobile Website- Just go to M.DisneyWorld.com from your cell phone (you must have a data plan). It's not as in depth or up to the minute as the Disney World Apps, but it's still fun to see whether the wait time for Peter Pan's Flight has finally dropped to "moderate" or even "see now" instead of its usual "high demand". It happened once!

Great Walt Disney World Websites

Whether you use these to reminisce, keep up on the happenings, or to plan your next vacation- you're sure to find these Walt Disney World devoted websites indispensable.
All Ears
One of the most comprehensive sites on Walt Disney World, All Ears offers planning information, a question/answer column, a constantly growing photo section, ride information, hotel info and pictures, and now up-to-the-minute blogs by some of the staff as they travel.
ScreamScape
Not a strictly Disney site, but they have more updates on the goings on at the parks than almost any other site. They include concrete info, rumors, and even news items.
Official Walt Disney World Site
Oddly- this has the least information. However, you can actually book your trips here, and the intro music... well, it'll make you want to go more. However, you could get lucky and find a special offer. We've gotten some great deals just by checking this site often.
WDW Magic
I've just found this website via an article on Screamscape. They've got tons of information, pictures, and more. It's designed by WDW fans, for WDW fans.
Walt Disney World News Today
This is a bit of a new site for me. I heard about it through Mickey's Magic on Live365- they keep fairly updated on Disney news, but I wouldn't recommend it as an exclusive source of info.

Tips to Maximize Your Out-of-Park Experience

Things to Bring Back

1. Rent or buy a lightweight video camera if you don't have one already. Even sporadic filming can be a balm to the soul months after your Walt Disney World trip. (hint: parades, fireworks, and anything set to music is particularly effective)

2. Buy CDs and DVDs while you're still on property if you have even a little interest. It can be much more expensive trying to order them from home unless you order directly through Walt Disney World- and their shipping is astronomical!

3. If there is an attraction you love, get the merchandise you want while you can. Disney gives very little warning before shutting down even very popular attractions.

4. If you're going to spend $100 on souvenirs (yes, I know, more like $1000), concentrate on things that will still mean something to you in 10 years time. Stuffed animals are cute for a month or two, but down the road that t-shirt or model of Cinderella's Castle will still be something you look forward to displaying.

5. Take just enough pictures to jumpstart your memories. Concentrating too much on recording will prevent you from experiencing the present.

When popular rides are closed for rehab, it's a great photo opp!

CDs to Keep the Magic Alive

Listening to CDs of Walt Disney World attractions, and especially the fireworks and parades, is what works best when I'm feeling Disney withdrawal. Best of all, they can be played at home, in the car, and even at work!

It's also a good way to get a loved one to start craving the magic.

Listen to the Rides at Walt Disney World

There are so many more stations- but these are my favorites on my playlist. For more stations, go to Live365 and type "Disney" into the search. You'd be amazed how much comes up. Please note that some of these stations are only available to VIP members, but there are quite a lot available with the free membership.

Mickey's Magic: Live365- Mostly Disney movie soundtracks, but because I prefer their playlist over other soundtrack stations, and because they have a higher percentage of ride soundtracks than other soundtrack stations, this is my favorite. Free

E Ticket Radio: Live365- Currently a free station, and has some great older rides as well as some of the newer ones. Free

D-Magic Radio 2.0: Most of this station's playlist is average for a Disney Park station, but here's what makes this station so very, very good. Every weeknight, from 8:30pm to 9:30pm they play Illuminations: Reflections of Earth, starting with the pre-show. Does it get any better than that? Free

Park Hopper Radio: Live365- this station is currently free, and is my favorite of the bunch. Free

Radio Buena Vista: Live365- a great station with a good mix. However, streams aren't always available for non-VIP members. Usually Free- depending on number of listeners.

The Haunted Mansion!: Live365- All Haunted Mansion, all the time. Complete ride tracks from every HM including Phantom Manor in Disneyland Paris, isolated sounds (for instance, just dogs howling, or singing busts w/out music), a HM story, practice and trial session recordings, and more. Free

Reedy Creek Radio: Live365, FStream, and Streaming Windows Media Player- a music of the Disney Parks internet radio station where your vote counts. You can become a member (it's free) at ReedyCreekRadio.com to access the forums and chat rooms and put your special requests or suggestions into appropriate forum threads. The people at Reedy Creek Radio are attentive and the chat room is friendly. There's a good mix of attractions, parades/fireworks, area music, and pop-ified classic Disney music.

Great Books for Keeping the Magic Alive!

Not only will you see the Disney parks through an imagineer's eyes, but you'll get to wow your travel mates with your new knowledge on your next trip.

Watch The Parks Live

Spaceship Earth
Weatherchannel.com has a camera on top of The Swan (or was it the Dolphin?) hotel that aims directly at Spaceship Earth. You can watch it live, or watch the footage from the past hour, past day, or past month.
HoJo Mattercam
Disneyland- the Howard Johnson has a camera on top of their hotel that shows the Matterhorn (I got to see people on the coaster!), and can be turned to see the rollercoaster with the mickey on the side, and part of Space Mountain. Supposedly you can control it yourself, but I couldn't work the controls.

Nice lens. I like your comments about the Disney website. I have to turn down the volume on my computer when it comes on or my kids get so distracted ( or is it me who gets distracted)?

See ya real soon!

Final Note

If you've enjoyed this lens, or if it's helped you in anyway, please remember that all purchases made through any of my lenses helps to fund my next trip to the World (and therefore, more info for you!). Thank you.
