Keg Tap Instructions

A Guide to Proper Keg Tapping Techniques

There are several options available for keg taps. However, asking the person at the end of the bar or that college kid with the messy hair may not provide the best tapping outcomes possible. For simpler keg tapping instruction, it is wise to consider purchasing a keg tapping kit. These kits come with everything necessary to properly tap a keg. It should also be noted that keg kits vary upon the particular type of keg being tapped. A kit designed to tap an imported keg, will not work on a domestic beer. There are several types of couplers included within the kits that will securely lock onto the specific type of keg. It is best to ask the keg provider for the type of coupler needed.

Once the keg and keg tapping kit is purchased, there a few keg tap instructions that will need to be followed closely to ensure proper tapping and quality beer poured for every cup. While the keg is in transit, it is best to cover the keg with a thick blanket or ice in an attempt to prevent the keg from warming. Once the keg has reached the event, it needs to be placed immediately within a tub or cooler of ice or inside a refrigerator with proper pump or hose access. After the keg has been placed in its assigned position, be sure not to move or disturb the keg. Allow the keg to sit for at least two hours to allow any settling. By not disturbing the keg, less foam will be created, requiring that less beer is poured off at the end of the keg tapping process.

Once the keg has settled, be sure to remove the dust kit. Make sure the beer faucet is turned off and that the keg coupler is in the off position. Afterwards, align the coupler directly above the lug housing atop the keg. Firmly press down, forcing the coupler into the lug housing and begin turning the coupler clockwise to securely lock the coupler into place. Once it can be turned no longer, the keg is considered tapped.

After the keg tap instructions have been followed, the handle should be lifted to pour off excess foam caused by the distillation process. Allow this foam to run off before drinking begins. It is also wise to avoid partial opening of faucet as this can cause foam.

Once the keg tap instructions are completely done, it is imperative to keep the keg on ice for optimal drinking temperatures. It is also important to not over pump as this creates extra foam. It is only necessary to pump the keg to ensure proper beer flow.

As long as proper instructions have been followed, the beer should last enough time to truly enjoy the efforts of purchasing, transporting, and tapping of the keg. By following proper keg tap instructions, the keg of beer should last at least 48-hours before going flat or tasting stale.

Needs more practice.
