80's Pop Art Icon Keith Haring

Keith Haring was a wonderul visual artist that lived from May 4, 1958 to February 16, 1990. He played an important roll in the early subway graffiti art scene in New York during the 80's. His artwork was considered Pop Art at the time. Haring would mainly use chalk to draw his figures which depicted them dancing, hugging and woven together in cool patterns that spoke to the public. Haring put his images up in New York subways and buildings. With thousands of people walking by his artwork everyday it didn't take long before he became part of the gallery art scene as well. His strong powerful images would be used to help educate the public about things in society that were not talked about as much at the time.

Haring's work would tackle subjects like: AIDS awareness, socio-political ideas, crack cocaine abuse, anti-Apartheid and also love. Andy Warhol was one of Haring's biggest influences as far as other artists who came before him. He also looked up to Picasso and was strongly influenced by his works. He was also good friends with Jean Michel Basquiat, who was also painting in subways in the early 80's. Haring's work during the 80's contributed to a lot of positive messages that made the public aware of dangers and suffering facing the public.

Haring passed away in 1990 due to complications with AIDS. The Keith Haring Foundation was formed in 1989 before his death to help educate about AIDS awareness. He contributed lots of money and rights to images to help fund this organization so it can help others forever. His overwhelming generosity and caring for the world can be seen in all of his artwork. The heart and soul of his work can be felt by the viewer with such the simple use of imagery. Keith Haring was a very talented and caring artist that will always be remembered.

I really like the feeling of falling pieces of a clock that are stuck in motion. A very strong image that is one of my favorites.

This piece deals with love and family, Haring often made pieces about family values, this piece is full of joy. This is, Mother Holding Baby from 1986

I love the movement in this piece and the feeling of uncertainty, joy and fun.
Haring's iconic, "Radiant Baby", was one of his most well known images. I love the contrast of the three primary colors in this piece. The use of red stirs emotions while the blue radiant baby draws your attention. The yellow gives the piece a blast of energy.

This was one of the first images to put Haring in the spotlight. Radiant Baby, shows how Haring would express the different stages of life that all people go through. It is fitting that the birth of his career would begin with the image of a baby.

I love this piece, it reminds me of M.C. Escher's style a little bit, another one of my favorite artists. The monkeys are great! I love the use of color also in this piece, it really pops.

This piece shows how he loved to express love. This piece shows two male figures holding a heart, more than likely a piece about gay relationships and exposing that to the public. His art has the ability to mean so much.
I love the use of bright red in the heart. This piece shows the unity in Haring's work and the expression of love to the world.

Haring was awesome at composition and this piece has everything going for it. The great red heart, the unity of the people working together to obtain love. I love the feel of compassion of this piece and wanted to share it as well.

This piece tackles the subject of family violence. A caring Haring piece! Haring dealt with all kinds of social issues, his images have become modern symbols that are universal. He helped domestic violence awareness throughout the community and world with his paintings. These struggles of power can be seen throughout his works.

To me this piece shows joy through dancing, and I love the use of color plus the movement of the piece. Harings' work was featured in several of Red Hot Organization's efforts to raise money for AIDS and AIDS awareness. Specifically, its first two albums, Red Hot + Blue and Red Hot + Dance -- the latter of which used this image for it's cover.

Lots of unseen works and over ten years of compiling the best details for this book. This is probably one of the best books on Haring in my opinion. Lots of details and images that have not been seen before. This is a great table piece, just look at, it screams conversation piece...:)

Haring's tribal type style is really neat and this piece is a great example of that. You can order this print and also have the option of having it framed to your taste. This is a very bold and interesting piece that I wanted to share.
