How to Solve Kenken Puzzles

What is Kenken and how do you solve one?

Kenken is the hottest new puzzle on the planet. It can be a simple fun diversion to help you relax, or it can become an addictive obsession that trains your brain to discover new patterns of logic.

Although people are inventing new "flavors" of Kenken all the time, the basic rules are simple enough for you to understand in one minute.

This lens will point you to the best places to download Kenken puzzles for your level, and to where you can learn simple and advanced strategies.

How Kenken Began

A special teacher with a special gift.

In 2004 Tetsuya Miyamoto, a Japanese math teacher, created Kenken to help his students learn math. It followed along the lines of his educational philosophy of "teaching without teaching."

True to that philosophy, Kenken involves your mind in mathematical ways that feel like anything but how school math is usually taught. It is fun, free-flowing, and never makes you want to ask, "...but why do we have to learn this stuff?" You learn it without effort, and with fun at every turn.

Why on earth don't schools teach like that?

Luckily, they may begin to, soon. Nextoy, LLC is the American company that owns the Kenken trademark. The owner, Robert Fuhrer, has plans to bring Kenken to schools across America. That would be a wonderful mission, and we wish Nextoy much success with it.

In the meantime, you don't need to go to school to learn Kenken. You can download free Kenken puzzles from Nextoy's site, http://kenken.com.

Will Shortz takes up the Cause

Will is the Puzzlemaster at the New York Times and National Public Radio

Will is the most visible puzzle-guy in the US, so it's great that he's promoting Kenken. Any excuse to help Americans learn math is a good thing.

In this video, he explains the absolute simplest Kenken puzzle you will ever see. It's a great introduction to Kenken.
