Early Man in America

In one prominent case involving ancient skeletal remains, the debate over lineal descent ended up in a court of law. The remains, known as Kennewick Man, were found in 1996 on the Columbia River near Kennewick, Washington, on property belonging to the federal government. A skull and more than 300 bones and bone fragments were found at the site, making up among the oldest, best preserved, and most complete human remains ever found in North America. ~Encarta

Kennewick Man

The history of the Kennewick Wa area includes the fascinating ~Kennewick Man~, a skeleton that has been dated as being 9, 200. This cultural artifact was unearthed in Columbia Park, July 28, 1996, and has received large amounts of international attention.  Of intense interest is that the fossil appears to have Caucasian The Kennewick Manfeatures, despite being labelled an indigenous dweller thought to have lived over 9,000 years ago.

The Kennewick find is still a matter of controversy as to who actually has ownership rights. Its discovery was an accident brought about by observers at the annual hydroplane race who spotted the skull whilst the races were on.

The current Kennewick Man debate is in regards to the relationship of American Indian religious obligations and the science of archaeology. At present, the Native American Graves and Protection and Repatriation Act has enabled 5 American Indian groups to claim the remains (the Nez Perce, Umatilla, Yakama, Wannapum, and Colville). Each tribe claims that the remains are theirs, and that they require burial by traditional means.

The United States Court of Appeals ruled that a cultural link could not be established in February of 2004. As such, more scientific research has been called upon, although it remains unclear as to how the cultural elements of the debate are being included.  The Kennewick Man remains can be viewed at the Burke Museum at the University of Washington.

Innovative Programs to Advance Research
LSDF 07-02 will issue a call for proposals in late Summer, 2007, with full proposals due in October. Approximately $20 million in grants will be awarded. The focus of the competition is to support the establishment of innovative new programs whose work will increase life sciences competitiveness for Washington. Awards are expected to be announced in March, 2008.

Who Is Eligible To Apply?
Eligible applicants include, but are not limited to, the following non-profit Washington organizations: public and private universities, non-profit research institutions, public health departments and hospitals. Applicants must be non-profit organizations, but forprofit companies are encouraged to join an eligible applicant in a collaborative proposal.

Public Information Sessions Scheduled
A series of public information sessions is being scheduled around the state to familiarize life sciences researchers and providers with the focus and requirements of LSDF 07-02. Dr. John Des Rosier, LSDF Director of Programs, and Dr. Mark Hertle, Senior Program Officer, will describe the funding opportunity, explain the proposal process, and answer questions. They will also provide a preview of the LSDF 07-03 competition, scheduled to be announced in fall 2007.

The information sessions are free and open to the public. A calendar of their times and dates is available on the LSDF website. Interested researchers and organizations are encouraged to visit the site for background information on the Fund, periodic LSDF reports, and program guidelines and application requirements as they become available. Email inquiries can also be directed to info@lsdfa.org.
