Kenny Chesney

Kenny Chesney is an American country music singer

Kenny Chesney - Greatest Hits

East Tennessee-born singer Kenny Chesney has, in the course of his relatively brief career, proven to be an unremarkable but thoroughly competent singer who shows occasional flashes of brilliance when teamed with the right song. That happens roughly half the time on this 17-cut compilation disc, which, despite its title, actually includes four new songs, one rerecording, and a remix. Amid soppy country-pop chart fodder ("Me and You," "When I Close My Eyes") and second-rate ditties ("How Forever Feels," "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy"), Chesney hits his stride on robust country ballads like "You Had Me from Hello" and the lead single "I Lost It." On other gems--like "That's Why I'm Here," a heartfelt tribute to the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program that topped the charts a while back; "Baptism," a great duet with Randy Travis; and his fine rerecording of "Tin Man," the song that launched his career in the mid '90s--Chesney even manages to attain an ephemeral but utterly moving transcendence over his vocal limitations and sometimes questionable song choices. -- Bob Allen

In 1993, Kenny Chesney put out his first album My Wildest Dreams (on Capricorn Records) which sold poorly and generated no radio hits. Each subsequent Chesney release, however, has done better than its predecessor, culminating in 1999's platinum-selling Everywhere We Go. The momentum continued with this, his first hits collection.

For starters, the ten previous hits are truly great. The wedding anthem "Me and You" and the alcoholic saga "That's Why I'm Here" are incredibly moving, whereas the foot stompin' "How Forever Feels," "She's Got It All," and "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" generate loads of excitement. Those latter uptempo tunes are where Chesney really shines, with his twangy vocals at their most distinctive and full of personality.

None of the seven new recordings on Greatest Hits (two of which are remakes) are remotely as rowdy. The Randy Travis duet "Baptism" aims for inspiration, but gets mired in a lumbering melody, while the mid-tempo tales "Don't Happen Twice" and "For The First Time" are thematically and musically repetitive. A live version of "Back Where I Come From" offers a stronger vocal than the original, however, and "I Lost It" is one of his best ballads to date.

Ultimately, the success of "Don't Happen Twice" and "I Lost It" at country radio helped make this set a mega best-seller. Still, Chesney needed to pick up the pace with some high-octane new material next time around. He did just that with the strong followup album No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problem and its toetapping leadoff hit "Young." -- James E. Bagley "Jim Bagley" (Sanatoga, PA USA)

The Road and the Radio - Kenny Chesney

After the sort of year that Kenny Chesney has experienced--from a whirlwind courtship through a short-lived marriage--a guy needs some time to chill. Thus it's no surprise that The Road and the Radio finds the party-hearty country hunk in an uncommonly introspective mood. The soul-searching title track establishes the album's intimacy and theme of taking stock, sustained through the bittersweet balladry of "Who You'd Be Today," "In a Small Town," "Freedom," and "Like Me." Though Chesney only wrote one track here, "Beer in Mexico," he invests the rest with personal conviction. Even the comparatively hard-rocking "Living in Fast Forward" has a reflective twist to it, while the Caribbean lilt of "Tequila Loves Me" has more than a measure of melancholy. Whatever the effects of romantic travails on his personal life, his music has gained some emotional depth. -- Don McLeese

The old Kenny is back!!!,
Kenny Chesney started out as a great country artist but over the last 3 albums he seemed to take a detour through Margaritaville leaving his country fans to hope that he was still on his way to his next country show. After hearing his latest release 'The Road and the Radio' it looks like the old Kenny is back. There are a couple songs that talk about sand and/or sun but they don't have the island feel that his last 3 albums have had. Personally I'm not a Jimmy Buffett fan so music that resembles it hasn't been my cup of tea. I thoroughly enjoy Kenny's latest work. If you're like me and you missed the old country Kenny you'll enjoy this cd. If you became a fan of Kenny's from his last 3 releases or you liked them better, I still think you'll like this release as while the sound may be more country, the feel is still laid back. Overall 5 stars and I feel an album all of his fans will enjoy. -- Music Lover (USA)

When the Sun Goes Down - Kenny Chesney

Though Kenny Chesney had been building a rabid fan base over the years, no one expected his 2002 release, the multi-platinum No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problems, to make him a superstar. But the Luttrell, Tenn., native had found a batch of songs that perfectly captured that scary no-man's land between adolescence and adulthood, precisely where the bulk of his followers happened to live. On its sequel, When the Sun Goes Down, the protagonists are older, with kids on the way and hectic jobs that rob them of leisure time. In fantasizing about those college keg parties and hedonism after dark, they search for a sigh of relief. Chesney understands this, and his own changes, too. Emotionally he's more at home in his own skin, and since his voice has gotten deeper and wider, he sounds increasingly confident in the studio, besting guest artist Uncle Kracker on the title song, a warmed-over Jimmy Buffett vibe. He's also matured as a writer. The majority of his four songs, two co-written with others, are no match for "There Goes My Life," the powerful unwed father ballad that served as the album's first single, or even "When I Think About Leavin'," another tune about standing at the crossroads. But his memorable "Being Drunk's a Lot Like Loving You" will burrow deep in your psyche, and prove Chesney a fine guide to confronting pain. Better keep this one handy. -- Alanna Nash

10. Outta Here Chesney
11. Old Blue Chair

I've never been a huge Kenny Chesney fan. His early music was immature and radio-friendly to the core. His latter-day music, however, has an edge to it--for example: few artists would have the nerve to record a song as brutally honest as "Anything but Mine;" still fewer would put it out as a single (and the controversy this song may or may not cause isn't even intended to sell the record, as evidenced by the fact that it's already won awards and been named Country Album of the Year, and established Chesney as a serious artist). I respect Chesney for that, and so I decided to buy the album.

This is great music right here. Unlike a lot of contemporaries, Chesney is a great writer--he doesn't write much, but the four songs he wrote or cowrote on here ("I Got Back", "Keg in the Closet," "Bein Drunk's a Lot Like Lovin You," and "Old Blue Chair") are four of the best. And his choice of covers is nearly impeccable..."There Goes My Life" still brings a tear to my eye, while "The Woman With You" strikes to the bone with any working man or woman.

There are few duds on here. "Outta Here" it a bit cliched, and the title track follows a oft-repeated Buffet vibe...but it's catchy as hell. Even "When I Think About Leaving," which begins like any other song you've ever heard, quickly turns poignant and sentimental. Chesney's voice has matured, his writing and song selecting capabilities have matured...WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN just may be the album of his career (though, thankfully, not the last). It's great country music, plain and simple, from a guy who knows what he wants and what his fans want, and delivers on both levels. -- DanD (Central Illinois)

No Shoes No Shirt No Problems - Kenny Chesney

A megahit with young country fans, Kenny Chesney may seem like an accidental star, but he's succeeded largely by understanding what his following wants to hear. No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems taps directly into the squiggly vein that runs between adolescence and adulthood, when responsibilities call and Jimmy Buffett dreams beckon. As much a celebration of life as of youth itself, the album succeeds best when Chesney turns wistful and thought-provoking ("A Lot of Things Different," "Good Stuff") and makes firm decisions about what really matters in life. Sentimentality reigns supreme--you can already imagine a sea of flickering cigarette lighters when he does this material live--but as "Big Star," a song about a girl who wants to be just that, spells out, No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems is a solid affirmation to go for what you want in this silly ol' world. Chesney certainly has, and if this short, bald guy from tinytown, Tennessee, can catch a rainbow, the rest of us ought to take heart. -- Alanna Nash

Kenny Chesney took a break from the recording studio for a while, but he's back with his first studio album since 1999's EVERYWHERE WE GO. NO SHOES, NO SHIRT, NO PROBLEMS is well worth the wait. The album features songs which run through a similar vein, reliving memories and the past, all with a sense of carefree and freedom to them. The first single "Young" is a song many can relate with, remembering one's youth where you were free and you marched to your own drum, no fears, no regrets. The title track has a tropical like feel to it, with a carefree feeling and relaxed approach. Songs like "Big Star", and "Dreams", tell the story about never giving up on your dreams, and watching them come true. There are also some commanding ballads that you would expect from Chesney, such as "A Lot of Things Different", "I Remember", "On The Coast of Somewhere Beautiful", "One Step Up", and "I Can't Go Back There". Overall it seems that Kenny took time off, and it was well worth it, with another consistent good album, perhaps up in the running for his best since 1997's I WILL STAND. Overall its a great album for the summer time, or any mood your in, give it a listen! -- J. M. Zuurbier (Canada)

Surely one of country's rising male stars is Kenny Chesney, and "No Shirt" will do nothing to hamper his popularity. "Contemporary" is a good word to describe his musical stylings, as electric guitars dominate much of the instrumentation especially on all the upbeat numbers. Some downright rock riffs will maybe offend those who resist the crossover trend, but most listeners will no doubt accept them in stride... Over half these new songs are ballads, which gives Kenny's clear clean voice a chance to shine. On most of the cuts, just the right amount of either string work or background singers (even Tim McGraw on the "bonus" track "I Can't Go There") provide very nice harmony, with steel guitar frequently filling in the interludes.

Kenny had radio hits with the lead-off cut "Young", which somewhat sets the theme for the CD; "Big Star"; and the title song, that latter with a catchy, almost calypso feel to the beat behind the music. Maybe our favorite was the lush ballad "Dreams", but truthfully the whole album is filled with good listening. No wonder this latest CD from Chesney has hit number one -- enjoy! -- Gerald M. Bull "Jerry Bull" (Fairview, TN United States)

Everywhere We Go - Kenny Chesney

Modern country fulfills a real musical need. It offers songs about adult issues--relationships, employment, religion, and children--couched in the modern production values familiar to more recent generations. Artists such as Randy Travis, George Strait, Clint Black, and Vince Gill have proven time and time again that slick and down-home are not necessarily incompatible. For it to work, however, requires excellent songwriting and distinctive, emotionally evocative singing. Unfortunately, too much of Everywhere We Go, Chesney's fifth record, is second-rate material and paint-by-numbers arrangements sung with an emotional sameness that seems to make little distinction between the humor of "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" and the romance of "You Had Me from Hello." For a moment, during "Baptism"--a duet with Randy Travis--Chesney invests some real emotion, and the restrained instruments seem in tune with the joyful yet serious subject matter. Then Travis comes in and demonstrates the vocal power and range that it takes to be the kind of artist that Chesney merely aspires to be. -- Michael Ross

On Kenny Chesney's 1999 album EVERYWHERE WE GO, there is nothing groundbreaking or new, but Chesney provides his fans with the goods which has made his past albums a joy to listen to - good songs with meaning. The album opens on a high note with the torch ballad "What I Need To Do", which is one of my favorite KC songs. "How Forever Feels" is another irresistible summer song, with a catchy chorus and is sing-along worthy. "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" is a fun upbeat song, with a killer chorus, a humorous song indeed. "You Had Me From Hello" is a definate wedding song hit, echoes from his past hit "Me And You" or "When I Close My Eyes", but "Hello" is a beautiful song indeed. "Life Is Good" and "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" are both fun, upbeat inspiring numbers sure to lift your spirits. Other highlights include the title track, and "A Woman Knows". The only song I didn't particularily care for was "Baptism", the duet with Randy Travis. Overall EVERYWHERE WE GO is a consistent effort, and well worth repeated listens. -- J. M. Zuurbier (Canada)

I Will Stand - Kenny Chesney

This CD, a great leap of growth from "Me and You". The ballads are one of the best he has ever done in his carreer, including the self-titled song, "I will stand" and "A Chance" two very good and touching songs. "She's Got it All" of course is a classic song, and the video goes along to why the girls really do love Kenny. "That's why I am here" is a career marker. His biggest hit to date to be honest. Never has he had a song that has touched almost listener. Its a great effort by Kenny Chesney, and I recommend it to the highest degree. KC is the best! -- mandy1826 "mandy1826" (Indianapolis, IN USA)

11. When I Close My Eyes (Acoustic Version)

Kenny Chesney's 1997 album I WILL STAND provides some of his best material, and overall one of his most consistent albums. The album opens with the summer sing-along song, the #1 hit "She's Got It All". The album has the perfect balance of uptempo country songs, and beautiful ballads. The song "That's Why I'm Here" is a touching ballad about an alcoholic, a definite highlight on the CD. Kenny also manages to do a cover of Tina Turner's "Steamy Windows" and does the song justice. He also joins Tracy Lawrence and George Jones on the honky tonk, "From Hillbilly Heaven To Honky Tonk Hell". Some touching ballads include "I Will Stand", "A Chance", and the acoustic version of past hit "When I Close My Eyes". Other highlights include "You Win, I Win, We Lose", "Lonely Needin Lovin" and "She Always Says It First", but there is no bad song on here, no filler whatsoever. Overall I WILL STAND is a consistent album and one of his best. Give it a try. - J. M. Zuurbier (Canada)

Me and You - Kenny Chesney

Now don't get scared by the young Kenny Chesney. He may look young, but his songs aren't so immature. He has a few great hits on this CD including the title track, "Me and You". This song is Timeless and is played at weddings all the time. How fitting is the song though... absolutely. And then his fan favorite is found on this album... which is my absolute favorite KC song ever.. "Back Where I Come From" and this is the studio version... which I happen to like more. The song about growing up in the country.. "Some say it's a backwards place, narrow minds on a narrow way.. but i make it a point to say that's where I come from". If you get a chance to see Kenny Live.. this is one of the greatest parts of the show.. he has clips of when he was younger. It is a great show. The rest of the cd has some great songs... pick it up.. I promise you won't be dissapointed. -- mandy1826 "mandy1826" (Indianapolis, IN USA)

Kenny Chesney's 1996 album ME AND YOU provides some of his best ballads, and uptempo songs. His voice is distinct, and offers different elements to each song, bringing them to life. While there was nothing truly groundbreaking on this CD, it still has some exciting material worth listening to. The ballad "Me And You" is a touching love song. The ballad "When I Close My Eyes" is one of his most touching ballads, with a good indication of what he has to offer voally. There are quite a few uptempo songs on here as well. "Back Where I Come From" is one of his favorites he has quoted in interviews, a song about remembering where you've come from, and where you're going. He does an excellent cover of the Don Williams hit, "(Turn Out The Lights And) Love Me Tonight". Other highlights include "Aint That Love", "Back In My Arms Again", "Another Friday Night" and "It's Never Easy To Say Goodbye". Overall a consistent album, not his best, but definately worth a listen. -- J. M. Zuurbier (Canada)

Kenny Chesney jumps into the Christmas CD market with All I Want for Christmas is a Real Good Tan. By far the best song on this CD is "Pretty Paper" with Willie Nelson, it is simple and they sound good together. "Merry Christmas From Dixie" with Randy Owen from Alabama and "I'll be Home for Christmas"(my favorite holiday song) are also pretty good, but beyond those three, this CD is a monument to mediocrity. "Jingle Bells" should have been called "Steel Drums", they are overpowering. The traditional "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem" and "Silent Night" were not meant to have the island vibe infused. And what is with the synth work on "Silver Bells"? He should have remade his novelty hit song as "She Thinks My Sleigh is Sexy". This CD tries to be laid back but comes out overpolished. -- K.
