Kentucky Is A Hot Bed For Finding Fossils.

Newly updated!! People from all around the world come to northern Kentucky to look for fine examples of trilobites, brachiopods, cephalopods, bryozoans, echinoderrms, crinoids, and others.   There is a fairly new highway called the Double AA Highway.  There are many road cuts along this highway.  There are many other roads between small towns that are prime hunting areas.  Maysville, Kentucky has a new bridge that goes across the Ohio river.  There are deep road cuts at that location.  You will find many fossils in these areas that are loose from the matrix.

What To Look For

Trilobite

The one fossil that every fossil hunter or also called an paleontologists amateur or pro wants to find for their collection is a trilobite. There are different types of trilobites. The most common one you will find in this area is called a flexicalymene meeki. This is a picture of one I have found near Vanceburg, Kentucky. Notice the imprint the trilobite made in the hard clay just to the right of it.

It has been awhile when this has seen the light of day.

Half dugged out trilobite. Can you find it?

Something Else To Look For

Brachiopods

Brachiopod shells are probably the most commonly collected fossil in Kentucky. They have two shells and lived attached to the sea floor. There are many different types that you can find in this area. A lot of times you will find them with both shells together.

We've just begun to get into fossil hunting as part of our Dinosaur Discovery; we haven't found a trilobite though!

That's fabulous. I'm in England and we have a Jurassic coast where it's possible to find fossils. I've spent days looking for them. Interesting read.
