Perfumes have been created by talented perfumiers for millennia; every civilization has placed a high value on fragrance, for religious and ceremonial occasions as well as for reasons of personal allure. Perfumes are composed of three 'notes' - top or head, middle or heart and base notes -which form a fragrant 'chord.'

Top notes are the first aromas to be sensed, usually lasting only a short while.

Middle notes are the scents which emerge after the top notes fade. This the main body of the perfume.

Base notes are the final phase of the perfume, and give the longest, deepest scents.

Perfumes are generally classified into four categories: Fresh, Floral, Oriental, Woody. Fresh is zesty, Floral is blended bouquets. Woody uses sandalwood, cedar, amber. Then there are blended sub-categories - such as fresh citrus, woody musk, floral aquatic, white floral, woody oriental.
