Keta or Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus keta)

This page has information on keta salmon (Oncorhynchus keta), also known as dog or chum salmon. These Pacific salmon have greenish-blue backs with silver markings on the tail.

Keta salmon range from 6-17 pounds, reaching maturity at 3-6 years of age. The flesh of this salmon is light colored flesh and mild tasting.

Keta salmon are found in the north Pacific, along the Asian Rim, and Along the coast of North America from Alaska to Oregon.

They are sometimes marketed under the name Silverbrite salmon. The roe of keta salmon is well suited for making ikura, bright-orange fish eggs used in sushi rolls.

Keta Salmon Migrations

Unlike most other Pacific species, Keta salmon move out to sea shortly after hatching. They spend at least one winter out in the Bering Sea or other open areas before traveling back upstream. Before migrating back to spawn, Keta salmon have high levels of oil in their bodies which is stored to provide sustenance during their spawning migration. This species spawns in brackish areas rather than migrating far upstream like other salmon.
