Kevin David Mitnick (born August 6, 1963) is a computer security consultant and convicted criminal who was a controversial computer hacker in the late 20th century.

In 1999, Mitnick admitted to illegally gaining access to computer networks and acquiring copies of software as part of a plea agreement before the United States District Court for the Central District of California in Los Angeles. Though Mitnick has been convicted of computer related crimes and possession of several forged identification documents, his supporters argue that his punishment was excessive. So how does one become a wanted computer criminal ?

It's all about social engineering. Kevin evaded paying for bus rides by having his own punch card for the Los Angeles bus system. Kevin was 12 at the time and soon realized the advantages of tweaking the system.
Kevin didn't stop there. High school promised to be a great place to get familiar with phone phreaking, amateur radio equipment and eventually computer networks and (in)security.

In 2002, Kevin Mitnick released a book called "The Art of Deception: Controlling the Human Element of Security" about social engineering. Together with an interview in "2600 Magazine" in 2003, Kevin Mitnick tells about his experiences and several of his actions.

The first one was the ticketing system of the Los Angeles bus system. Kevin rode it for free.
The FBI was put on a goose chase by Kevin with false trails and dead ends. Systems from DEC, IBM, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Sun Microsystems and Fujitsu Siemens were compromised by Kevin.
