And Why Did Kevin Riley Become An Infopreneur?
I grew up in the exclusive ski resort town of Klosters - high up in a mountain valley in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. Klosters is at the end of the Praettigau Valley, and just a 10 minute drive down from the city of Davos (You may know it as the site of the yearly World Trade Organization Summit).
My father was the head ski teacher in our town, and - since he could speak English - he taught many European royals how to ski. To this day, Klosters is Prince Charles' winter getaway. In fact, many folks from my hometown where on the invitation list for the royal wedding.
Skiing was part of our life, with ski races instead of the track & field days of other countries' schools. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, my friends and I brought our skis to school, as those two days held only morning classes and in the afternoon we were free to schuss the slopes. During morning classes, we impatiently clomped about in our clunky old leather ski boots. I still carry the mark where my friend kicked me in the shin one day :-D
From Skiing to Roping Calves
Planting My Entrepreneurial Seeds
In 1967, my parents decided to move to Canada. It was all brought on by my father's hospitalization, and the loss of control in his legs. No longer able to ski, this brave man decided to become a cattle rancher in the semi-desert of Kamloops, BC.
My father had spent his younger years in Montana, working on ranches and farms. This is a homestay practice done by many young Swiss to perfect their English. My father loved his time in the rolling grasslands and had always longed to be a cattleman.
So, I went from Swiss mountain boy to Canadian cowboy. I spent my teen years riding the range with crusty old cowboys, tossing bales and drinking beer with the hay crews, and riding in rodeos.
I also became a like-native English speaker and learned how to write great compositions. This would serve me well in my later years - as I started creating my first information products.
By 1977, I was feeling the entrepreneurial spirit. Hating to work for others, I started many a small venture. With each step into the business world I learned more. I also learned how enslaving it can be to run a small business - especially if it is in the retail sector.

When the Internet became accessible via the first graphical browsers, I saw that here was a vast opportunity. With a car salesman, I created my first commercial website. AutoNet.com was born to horrific birthing costs. In those days, domains were ridiculously expensive and we spent a fortune having a special searchable database programmed.
Unfortunately, we were too far ahead of the pack. Most people - especially the car dealers we were trying to sell this service to - had no idea of the power of Internet. Many of them had never even seen the Internet, and we had to take along photographs of our website!

What Took Me to Japan?
My Love Affair With the Japanese Culture
In the Fall of 1996, myself and a few other house builders found ourselves in the populous Japanese merchant city of Osaka.
Months after the Great Hanshin (Kobe) Earthquake, I was asked to travel to Japan and instruct Japanese carpenters in the craft of building Canadian 2x4 houses. These resilient structures had been the only ones to survive in some hard-hit areas.
This was another skill I had picked up in my years in the Canadian West. I was a carpenter and contractor.
We were totally lost. I knew about four Japanese words, and it took a week before I could even get us sugar from the corner store.
If it hadn't been for the plastic food displays in front of restaurants, we most likely would have starved. But, over the next few months, I fell in love with the place.
Reflections of a More Mature Kevin Riley
The Internet Evolves, and So Does a Young Man's Dreams
All the time I was running a successful construction business in a very foreign land, I was away from the Internet. In fact, for quite a few years I didn't even have a computer.
When I got back online in 2001, things were changing rapidly. But it wasn't until a few years later that the Internet truly became a great place for doing business.
Suddenly, there were good payment processors, scripts to deliver products. The baby Internet had grown up, and it was time to start a serious business.
In the meantime, I had gone from house builder to English teacher, after the devastating downturn in the Japanese economy had slowed construction to a standstill.
This allowed me a respite in my business endeavours, and gave me the time to reflect on my future business ventures. I was no longer a youngster and it was time to set out on a serious business-building crusade that would set me up for the rest of my life.
I Marry My Soulmate...
...And My Internet Pursuits Heat Up
On April 11th 2004 we said our wedding vows in a quiet ceremony with just immediate family. With this lovely partner at my side, it was time to build a truly remarkable business that would give us the opportunity to pursue our mutual love of travel.
I had written some small how-to books back in the 80s, and could see that being an infopreneur was the road to full freedom. It allowed a lot more freedom than any other business model. All I needed to do was learn more about the mechanics of it. So, I hit the books. I studied all about selling downloadable products on the Internnet.
And then, I started creating products. Unlike the booklets in the 80s, I could create anything from a 10-page report to a 200-page book. No longer did I have to count in the huge expense of printing and binding. No longer did I have to wait months to get my product into the marketplace. In fact, nowadays I have an idea on the weekend ... start writing on Monday ... and I'm selling it by Thursday.
How Does Kevin Riley Relax and Unwind?

Being an infopreneur allows Rieko and I to enjoy long vacations in our beloved Swiss mountains. Lately, we've been making a pilgrimage to the mountains every year. It's a long flight from Japan, but when we get there we enjoy a few weeks of blissful hiking in the fresh air of the Alps.
We also enjoy the cheese and chocolate ;-)
With a laptop computer and an Internet connection, I can run my information business from anywhere in the world.
Counting Our Blessings
Gratitude for the Opportunity I've Been Given

Last year, we were able to take my mother-in-law and sister-in-law all the way to Switzerland to meet my parents.
The happiness in my mother-in-law's eyes - who had never been outside Japan - brought it home to me how fortunate I am to live in this time of Internet.

Where Did The "Mission Leader" Title Come From?
On the Warrior Forum ... in my newsletter ... on my websites you'll see my name preceded by the title "Mission Leader". A question I often get asked is, "Why Mission Leader?"First, let me clear up another question I get a lot - I am not a missionary. I've been to many countries where missionaries go, but I was merely a tourist :-D
One of my main products is a home study course I named Mission: Make Money Online. I developed a theme for this course, based around the old Mission: Impossible series. However, in this case, it's more like Mission: Possible, as I created a home study course that makes it possible for true beginners to start creating and selling their own information products.
Why did I go with the Mission: Make Money Online theme? A big problem I kept seeing on the Internet (especially in the marketing forums) was people not succeeding due to a lack of focus. So, I created a Mission for them - a Mission to build a successful online business. And, I am the Mission Leader - leading new Agents through each step of their Mission.
"Your Mission, Should You Choose To Accept It ..."
To give you an idea of how easy it is to create a product - I scripted this on the flight to Switzerland ... shot a number of scenes and action sequences in Klosters and Zurich with my camcorder ... then edited the footage on my computer using nothing more than Windows Movie Maker.

- Interesting story Kevin. Listening to you on your videos I had in my mind you are either American or Canadian. Little did I know you actually come from the clear, clean cold of the Swiss Alps. But I suspect your adventures and life experiences have made you a global citizen and has enhanced your infopreneur success. You should write a novel loosely based on your journey. Happy I got connected to you via WF.
