What are key date coins? Just about any coin collector of U.S. coins will tell you that a key date coin is the most rare or difficult to obtain coin of a series. These are the low mintage hard to find coins that are needed to by coin collectors to complete a set and they are usually the last coins placed in a coin collection.

What Makes A Key Date Coin

Key Date Silver DollarWhat coin collectors refer to as a key date coin is determined by a number of factors that include the number of coins minted for that particular year, condition grades available and number of coins for sale. An example would be a coin with a low mintage of only 250,000 coins would mean that out of the millions of U.S. coin collectors only a limited number of coin collectors can purchase that coin for their collection. Even less if that particular coin is scarce in higher condition grades.
