There is nothing on the outside that can make you truly happy. Yes, achieving things can cause a momentary happiness but what they really do is provide a platform for the next desire. They are simply stepping-stones. True happiness is when you can be happy whatever the external circumstances because you know that all problems are temporary and well-being is your dominant state. Acknowledge your own power (you are the creator of your own reality), be appreciative of the ordinary everyday things and the people you love...and choose to be happy.

Very thoughtful and considered article. Blessed by a Squid angel. :-)

Great article - i actually watched the TED conference with Dan Gilbert on happiness and it was really thought provoking. I see that you don't mention money as a source of happiness - its ok to have values, vocation and variety but life gets difficult if every day is a financial struggle. Just a thought for another article perhaps.

Great point! Most of the research that I have seen on this topic shows that once people reach a certain level of financial stability, money doesn't have too much impact on their happiness. In other words, a complete lack of money (or financial stress) can definitely impact your happiness. But, once you reach a certain financial level (enough money to afford the basics) you will need to rely on other activities to improve your happiness.
