Useful tips. Sometimes if there are a few characters I need to use when I am not in Word or Unicode doesn't work, I use Word or some other means and copy them into a text document, which I keep on the desktop. Then I just have to open the document, copy the desired character, and paste it into where I need it.

I don't know where I learnt them, but I always use shorter Alt-mumerics for symbols. Alt-130 = é and Alt-138 = è are the ones I use most in French. I don't know what that system is.

a little note for laptop users. another method, available on some laptops, is to hit the Num Lock key and then you can use some of the letter keys towards the right of the keyboard (in the J, K, L region) to use the same Alt Shorcuts used for the regular keyboards with the number pad. This was available on my Vaio and I think you had to hit FN + the number combo with numlock selected. A bit tedious at first but it works. I ended up using Run CharMap because you can search for the characters by name, but maybe some people will like the keyboard option too. :)

Hi, Just thought I would let you know that Word 2010 inserts symbols in the same way that 2007 does. The major difference between 2007 and 2010 is that the Office button in the top left corner is gone in 2010. Instead, the functions in the Office button are now accessed through the File tab. Great lens!

  • BarbaraCasey Jul 10, 2011 @ 7:53 pm | delete
Math symbols are primarily in the Alt, 2, 4, 0 through Alt, 2, 5, 3 range. They are listed on the list of 300 alt key symbols that I post for sale. On the lens I listed the common symbols most folks are looking for. Also, some symbols just don't show up well on Squidoo. Hope this helps.

Also, for degree (°) it is Alt 01200
  • Manik_Bajaj Feb 10, 2011 @ 1:56 am | delete
To add a blank character, use Alt 0160. Try renaming your folder with this. It renames it blank. Pressing just spacebar to get blank characters don't work. :)

What a useful lens! I always have to do a engine search to find out how to do something with the keyboard. On my old computer I accidently hit a couple of random keys with my hand and it changed the whole way my screen looked. I was never able to get it back like it was. I don't know what I did and could never get an answer as to how to undo it. If I had seen this, maybe I could have solved the problem. Very useful lens. Thanks.

Many thanks for the alternative numeric keypad info, dgjohnston. Hopefully this will work with other laptops, too.
  • dgjohnston Apr 7, 2010 @ 8:38 am | delete
On my laptop (an IBM T43p) there is a numeric keypad laid over the normal keypad that is accessible with the NumLk key (i.e. Shift ScrLk). Using this with the Alt key allows me to enter all the special characters mentioned above. When I use NumLk the 7, 8, and 9 are in their normal position, then 4, 5, and 6 are on the U, I, and P (and labelled as such in a smaller font), 1, 2, and 3 on J, K, L, and 0 on the M. This gives the normal layout of the numeric keypad.
