Keyes Woodland Hills GM Dreams About the 1954 Oldsmobile F-88

Ranked #11,893 in Cars, #610,541 overall

The 1954 Oldsmobile F-88

My name's David Bradley. I'm the Internet Manager here at Keyes Woodland Hills GM. We carry Buick, GMC, and Cadillac. We used to have Pontiac. Pontiac has gone into history but is steeped in rich tradition with General Motors. Another brand from GM that is no longer is Oldsmobile. Also still a popular brand with GM enthusiasts. Recently a client emailed me something about a very rare concept car that Oldsmobile built but never produced due to the introduction of the Corvete. So for all you GM enthusiasts and classic car fans, take a look at this dreamboat roadster that never was...

That's a thing of beauty right there!

Could this Oldsmobile F-88 have changed history?

So the email talked about this car, but for whatever reason there was no picture. It asked the question, in 1954, could this Oldsmobile have "killed" the Corvette? Now, that's a tall order right there? How might the world be different if the F-88 by Oldsmobile went into production instead of or with the Corvette?

But what does it look like. Instantly I'm Google to quench my curiosity. Look at what I found? What a cool looking car! But is it cool looking just because it's something we've never seen before? Could it have really out sold the Corvette? It's hard to say considering how the Corvette is a staple in Americana and car history in general. Ultamately, you'll have to be the judge.

I'm going to paste the email in here so you can read it for yourself...

Here's the email...

What do you think?

This is the car that in 1954 could have "killed" the Corvette..... So, Chevrolet, being GM's big sales and profit Division, campaigned to GM to "kill" this car.

When Chevy was coming out with its 6-cyl. sports car with its 2-speed "Powerglide" transmission and side curtains here was a sports car from Olds with a big old V-8 and power windows.

So, GM said no to Oldsmobile on building this car...........

The world's rarest automobile. A 1954 concept Old's Rocket F88 - the only one in existence.

(read the story below) John S. Hendricks, (Discovery Communications founder) paid in excess of 3 million to acquire.

After spending decades as a collection of parts stuffed into wooden crates - the F-88 was reassembled.

In 1954 - the F-88 was a Motorama "Dream Car" and was one of only two - or an unconfirmed possible three ever created.
The F-88 seen here is literally the only car left of its kind - and was sold to John and Maureen Hendricks at the prestigious Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona for an unbelievable $3,240,000.

This acquisition made automotive history and is the "cornerstone" of the Gateway Colorado Automobile Museum in its own special room in a rotating display worthy of the F-88!

So I did a little digging...

...And here's what I found.

Originally titled the XP-20 the F-88 was a little pet project of GM designer Harley Earl. The made four cars but this one was the only one to have survived.

According to conceptcarz.com, The Oldsmobile F-88 is one of the most historically significant vehicles of its era and it is considered by many to be a great expression of automotive design from the 1950's. Which is considered by many automotive historians and enthusiasts alike to be the Golden Era.

The first F-88 ever built went out on the show circuit in 1954. It was first shown at the General Motors Motorama at the classic Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York.

An experiement in high performance, this 2 door convertable was Oldsmobile's legendary dream car. It had natural pigskin upholstery, low-poised fiberglass body, sparkling interior with metalic green highlights, and a 250 HP V8 Rocket engine. The elliptical grille mouth, hockey stick side trim and bullet tail lights are all period style Oldsmobile.

Harley Earl believed that the Oldsmobile could outsell and compete with the Corvette in a way that would have changed automotive history. Chevy however had other plans and the F-88 Rocket will remain simply a dream car...
