Short introduction in keylogging world

First time when I heard the term "keylogger" I had no idea what this was about and I bet many of you are in the same situation like I was.

So the first impulse was to open wikipedia.org and search for an explanation. I was surprised to see that the opened page was about keystroke logger. But soon I understood that keyloggers are in fact the keystroke loggers. The definition find out there was:
"Keystroke logging (often called keylogging) is a method of capturing and recording user keystrokes."

Keystroke cop or keystroke hacker?

And then I realized that these keyloggers are some kind of viruses that steal your private information. Now I remember a friend of mine talking about this. But after further reading, other points of view raised in my mind. As a human being that has the possibility to think, judge and make difference between good and bad things, you are free to choose in using the keylogger for your security or for other inappropriate purposes. It's just like people are using fire: most of them to cook or get warm and others, like pyromaniacs, to burn something or deliberately detent a fire.

The same is regarding keylogger, because the keylogging can be useful to determine sources of errors, to study how users interact with systems, and sometimes to measure employee productivity on certain tasks not only to steal information from other users or to violate someone's privacy. Such systems are also highly useful for law enforcement for instance, providing a means to obtain passwords or encryption keys and thus bypassing other security measures.

What's your purpose when using a keylogger?

The way of using keyloggers depends on each user's character, desire and personality. Fascinated about this small programs I started to search for more information regarding the first keylogger created, who was the person and who has used for the first time this logger. Unfortunately there are not many dates regarding his history, only pages and pages with products submitted on the market.
Instead, I find an interesting article written in 2000 in The Wall Street Journal with title "Keystroke Loggers Save E-Mail Rants, Raising Workplace Privacy Concerns".

It was the first prove that companies' owners tend to find new ways for improving productivity and protecting business assets but clashing with a new and controversial surveillance method.
Even nowadays in some countries the use of these applications is illegal although keyloggers are kind of "necessary evil to expose improper anti-consumer practices at the company".

It's all about you and your way of using keyloggers to make from them a keystroke cop or a keystroke hacker.
So what do you choose?

All these programs should be banned worldwide. Alot of these hackers use such programs in viruses to get pc users passwords. The banks etc will not back a ban due to the money they make off sell fraud protection. Yet again it's the little people who's privacy is being invaded with no-one to back us up. Ihope their is a law if companies are ever found using them there fined or hung, which is fair. There should be more protection for people who are not pc savvy like my silver surfer nan. Rant finished. thank you for letting me get that of my chest.
