You need two more bits of information at a minimum. How many pages already target that keyword and how strong are they?

To find out the first question, what is your competition? Simply open Google in your web browser. Type in you keyword in quotes,i.e. "keyword".

Google will return any pages that contain that exact phrase. This is a very general way of determining the competition. To refine it still further you can search the term like this:

allintitle: "keyword"

This makes Google look for web pages that contain the keyword in the page title, this is usually a sign that these pages are optimised for the keyword. This is a much better indication of your competition.

Now the second piece of the question, how strong is the competition is a little trickier to discover but fortunately there is a research tool that takes a lot of the work out of it.

Any webmaster worth his salt will have dumped Internet Explorer with all its problems and installed the Mozilla Firefox browser, better and faster with less security issues and a host of extensions. Firefox is not a research tool as such but when you combine it with the SEO extension it becomes a very handy tool .

What these two tools will allow you to do is to search the web as you do in IE but the SEO extension brings the facility to check the page rank, number of links and a host of other bits of information that let you determine the strength of the competition.

Wordtracker is a web based keyword tool which will help you to discover lots of search terms that you have probably not thought of. It will also give you the number of competing web pages and a figure that they call KEI.

Wordtracker keyword suggestion tool is around $60 a month but the information you can get is huge. The best part of this is that you will be using their bandwidth and more importantly their servers.

An important thing to consider with this tool is that as well as getting a highly efficient keyword research tool you also get access to a commanding library of information, tips and tutorials. Anybody who is starting out in intenet marketing will find this just as valuable as the keyword suggestion tool.
