Keyword for the Clueless and Beginners

Are you about to write a lens or have written a few and are still wondering what keywords do for your writing on the internet?

For me, having written 42 lenses and skirting the importance of the keyword for about 35 of them, many visits from readers probably have been missed. One reason for my lack of interest was the tutorials did not get through to me. The basics eluded my clueless mind.

The very simplest of terms and layman's concepts of the keyword tool will follow. Short and sweet. If you are a beginner on the internet you will know what keyword search and keyword optimization is by the end of this how to.

We will start with Keyword = The word or phrase typed into a Google search.

Keyword

Importance of Keyword Research

The article you want to write should have the keywords in it. That is how it is found when someone puts a word or phrase in the search box on the Google engine.

Another way to put it: keyword = The subject or theme of your article.

Once you have spent time on a lens you will want traffic because that is part of the fun of Squidoo. You will be disappointed if the visits column is 0 or 1.

Keyword Subject Theme

Google = go ogle

You have the subject or theme of your lens in you head or it may be written down on paper.

Do not go and click the Create a Lens! box. You have to do SEO first.

SEO = search engine optimization (the search engine is Google, Bing, Ask, Yahoo etc.) I think it is called the search engine to make it familiar to us, but the mechanical terms just confuse me.

This exciting step in writing an article for the internet is keyword search or SEO, using the keyword tool. Yes, stop and think about the tools you can use on the internet. This is where I always was very intimidated. You go to many tools on the internet and the tool is thousands of words, columns, and boxes and sign ins. Tools are pots and pans or clippers and soldering irons.

I have ignored this phase of writing. Too boggling. I will try to make it simple here.

Let's SEO

search engine optimization

Everyone looks for stuff on the internet. They will be looking for your article probably on Google.

Keyword Tool = Thesarus

Here we are going to plunge into the Keyword Tool.

1. Pull up another screen.

2. Make it half size.

3. Make this Squidoo screen half size. You can look at both screens at the same time.

4. Copy and paste: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
into the new screen.

5. Enter. Bam! The Keyword Tool. Created by Google.

6. Bookmark it so you can use it again without any trouble looking for it.

Keyword Tool

A keyword generator

Do Not read anything on the Keyword Tool if you are totally new to this. We will keep it simple.

1. Look half way down the page to the box that says "Descriptive words or phrases".
The button should be high lighted. Look right to a white box. Above the box it says
"Enter one keyword or phrase per line:"

2. Type keyword in the box.

3. Type in the picture characters.

4. click "Get keyword ideas"

Bam! A keyword list appears below.

Pen and Ink

Write down the Google keywords

Look at the four columns in blue.

We are going to work with the Keywords and Local Search Volume columns only.

Write down any keyword that has 20,000 or more. (This is what I did for this lens.)
My not so organized list to the right.

Look down the keyword list on your screen see "adwords keyword" has over 49,000 visits. I will not use that keyword because my lens is not about adwords. I am skipping, keyword advertising, adsense keyword, keyword ad and keyword marketing to name a few.

In other words, the key is to select and write down the keywords that you will be writing about and try to include them into your article where you can without sounding spammy (repetitious or obvious).

Top Keywords

Now I know what keywords to emphasize as I write my article. Start with a title. My goal is to write an article for beginners who have trouble with or do not know the internet terms. The keyword "keywords" has over 800,000 visits and "keyword" has over 4,000,000 visits.

Now go and click "Create a lens!"

My title will be Keywords for Beginners on Squidoo and the Internet.

Next is the url. Keywords was not available. I took keywords_for_beginners.

Lens intro title is next. This is the same as a subtitle. It should be close to the title.

I chose "Keywords for the Clueless and Beginners".

Do not start writing yet.

Tags

Chose the Primary tag before writing

The primary tag should be a two or three keyword phrase like in the title and subtitle.

My primary tag is "keyword for beginners".

You must put the primary tag in the "other tags" exactly the same.

Put all your other keywords in "other tags" for Squidoo searchers.

Now Write the Intro

Write your 75 to 85 word intro using some of your keywords. You will see that I have used 5 keywords in this intro and it sounds okay and gets the point across. At this stage I write my whole lens, add pictures and guest module. The first picture in the intro is mandatory for a good lens. Before you load a picture name it with your primary tag. After it is named then browse and upload it.

It is a good idea to name all the pictures with one tag or another.

Check the Health

The test.

I always use the health check available on the Dashboard.

The primary tag "keyword for beginners" failed. I like keyword above keywords because the visits are more. I changed the title to "Keyword for Beginners on Squidoo and the Internet," and the subtitle to "Keyword for the Clueless and Beginners". Than it passed health okay.

Write your lens and include different keywords where you can. Put your primary keyword (primary tag) in the last module as a closer.

Congratulations

If you are green on the first eight checks (except stars) you have the idea. Always start a published lens with more than three keywords. If you have any questions about this subject, HTML or other Squidoo tech questions go to SquidU at the very top of the Dashboard. Click forum titled "Help,Please"

Someone will answer it.

This first lens about SEO will give you good thorough advice in layman's language. I love this lens. Be sure to check it out.
