This book centres on the story of two women. Mariam is an illegitimate child who lives in the wilderness with her troubled mother. Her father visits her weekly providing her with the only real happiness in her bleak existence. However her father only visits her at home she cannot visit him or go to the city with him. Mariam's life is blighted by tragedy when she decides to go and visit her fathers home. This decision has consequences which alter the course of Mariam's life forever.
Laila enters Mariam's life later in the novel when she is orphaned and Mariam's husband takes her as a second wife. Despite Mariam's initial hostility to Laila the two women form a close and intense friendship and unite against their brutal husband Rasheed.
This is a very moving and gripping tale of love, betrayal, strength endurance and hope in the most apparently hopeless of circumstances.

The novel opens in Afghanistan in the final days of the monarchy and centres on the friendship between Amir and and his best friend Hassan, the son of his father's servant.
When Amir betrays his friend Hassan he is haunted by his actions into adulthood so much so that his guilt compels him to return to Afghanistan to make amends, years after he has emigrated to the USA. This is a moving and engaging tale of hope, guilt, betrayal and redemption.

Khaled Hosseini In His Own Words
'I hope The Kite Runner gives the Western reader some insight into and a sense of the identity of Afghan people that they may not get from mainstream news media. Fiction is a wonderful medium to convey such things. And I hope that the book helps humanize the Afghan people and put a personal face to what has happened there.'
'If my book generates any sort of dialogue among Afghans , then I think it will have done a service to the community.'
'I wanted to write about Afghanistan before the Soviet war because that is largely a forgotten period in modern Afghan history. For many people in the west, Afghanistan is synonymous with the Soviet war and the Taliban. I wanted to remind people that Afghans had managed to live in peaceful anonymity for decades, that the history of the Afghans in the twentieth century has been largely pacific and harmonious.'
'I have very fond memories of my childhood in Afghanistan, largely because my memories, unlike those of the current generation of Afghans, are untainted by the spectre of war, landmines, and famine.'
'In those days, women were a vital part of the economy in Kabul. They worked as lawyers, physicians, college professors, etc., which makes the tragedy of how they were treated by the Taliban that much more painful.'
'I returned to Afghanistan because I had a deep longing to see for myself how people lived, what they thought of their government, how optimistic they were about the future of their homeland. I was overwhelmed with the kindness of people and found that they had managed to retain their dignity, their pride, and their hospitality under unspeakably bleak conditions.'
'I grew up admiring my father greatly and had a very intense desire to please him.'
'During the Taliban era you couldn't read about Afghanistan without reading about hunger, war, landmines, refugees, and so on. The Taliban did nothing to alleviate those problems. What they did do was add a sense of the absurd on a grand scale. When they ordered the Buddha statues destroyed and prohibited art and sports and all the things that people take enjoyment in, we were all in a state of disbelief. We shook our heads and wondered how it had come to this.'
'The Taliban did Afghanistan a great, great disservice by shutting women out of the workplace. So the damage they inflicted is going to take years to repair: rebuilding the schools, getting girls to pick up books again, re-acclimating women into the workplace, and so forth. I think it's very tragic.'
'My dad came from a small village just a few kilometers from Herat, which is a large town in western Afghanistan. He was an only child raised by his mother (his father died when he was two years old). My mom was brought up in Herat itself. We're talking about the 1940s and '50s here so there was very little infrastructure where they lived - no electricity, no running water and so on.'
'That first couple of years in America was a difficult time for all of us. For my siblings and me, in addition to the anxiety of learning a new language, there were the usual fears of adolescence and pre- adolescence: Will I fit in? Will I make friends? Am I ever going to learn English? And will other kids make fun of me?'
'Afghanistan is full of great storytellers, and I was raised around people who were very adept at capturing an audience's attention with their storytelling skills. I have been told that there is an old fashioned sense of story telling in The Kite Runner. I would agree. It's what I like to read, and what I like to write.'
' don't quite know where the drive to tell a story comes from, for me or anyone else. Nor do I really know where the stories themselves come from. What I can say that for me, as I suspect for many other writers, a story grips me and demands to be told. The drive to tell a story becomes a compulsion. So there is little choice left. You either tell the story or go around absent-minded and in a half-daze. Stephen King once said that if you have a story to tell and the skill to tell it, and you don't, then you are a monkey. The point is stories, good stories at least, demand to be written.'
