Creating Art Again!

The Story of How I Became a Baby Clothes Designer

In the summer of 08,right around the time my son, Cai, turned one, I decided to get back in touch with my artistic side.

Since I was very little, I have loved to draw. When I was an elementary student, I was a latchkey kid, and I loved to pass the hours with a stack of white paper and a pencil, drawing picture after picture of cartoon people while the TV blared away. My parents always found me surrounded by a flurry of white paper.

I continued to draw a lot in high school, but I kind of lost that part of myself as a young adult. My best friend bought me a beautiful box of colored pencils and encouraged me to draw as a healthy distraction when my first marriage ended. That was an inspiration to me, but I still struggled to find a purpose or direction for any art.

After my son was born, I finally found my muse. I have always loved to draw people, and now I've got babies on the brain, so I started to draw little cartoon babies that express a unique personality or style . . . little punks, hippie babies, future geeks . . . before I knew it, I had pages and pages of ideas. I now spend about three hours a day working on my own shop, Little Characters, where people can buy T-shirts, onesies, and bibs featuring my original artwork.

(The photo shows me happily drawing away during Cai's nap)

(along with my oh-so-attractive double chin and pimple)

Creating Art - AGAIN! AGAIN!

The Story Continues!

I returned to work for a while as a Director of Children's Ministry for a large UU congregation, and it was wonderful, fulfilling work for me, but it wasn't the best for my son. So I made the difficult decision to leave that job and spend more time caring for him.

This has given me more time to focus on my designs again, and I've been feeling especially inspired by my Unitarian Universalist faith. in a way, I can continue to focus on the values that were at the core of my job.

I recently injured my back and have had to rest, and that has brought the unexpected blessing of even more time to devote to my designs!

My Favorite Songs (at the moment)

Give 'em a listen!

Here's your chance to dabble! No one can say I have narrow taste in music. I love punk, opera, blues, bluegrass . . . just about everything really!

Kerridwen's Amazing Technicolor Dream Hair

When I taught public elementary school, funky hair colors were not an option. My palette was limited to hair colors that occurred naturally. There have been several glorious periods in my life, though, when I've been able to go dye crazy. Here are some examples. The only weird one that's missing is Cocacola Red. My absolute favorite is dark brown with deep blue streaks, and that's what I've sported for the last year. But I'm curious to see what you think is the best hair color. If any of you would like to turn your hair strange colors, I highly recommend Manic Panic Hair Dye.

NOBODY Expects the Spanish Inquisition!

I met my British hubby online (Yahoo personals!) My profile said that I loved British humor (or humour, even!) Patrick thought that gave him a nice advantage so he contacted me. So British comedy, in a very real way, brought my husband and me together.

To protect myself from the crazies, I had created an email address and name just for the online dating. Being a huge Monty Python fan, I chose Spanish (first name) Inquisition (last name). Being rather thick, I didn't recognize how ironic a choice this was. I subjected my poor husband to a barrage of probing questions like "When have you been truly happy?"

A year later, when I had just asked all his British friends at a post-wedding party, "What do you hope to accomplish this year?" (I really know how to have fun), Patrick told them all about my pseudonym Spanish Inquisition, and I STILL hadn't made the connection for myself!

Okay - Some People Might Expect This Spanish Inquisition

For all you people who didn't get enough with the first clip, here's some more torture. For the record, this is the only kind of torture I condone.

My Favorite British Comedy

I'm as American as the next gal, but let's face it, the English are funnier!

I also highly recommend The Fast Show and Smack the Pony, but those aren't available to play on American DVDs.

Monty Python Inspired Baby Clothes: Your Mother Was a Hamster!

Monty Python Inspired Baby Clothes: Knights Who Say GOO!

This baby onesie has an original drawing of a toddler standing with a fur-lined helmet surrounded by little henchman. It says, "We are the Knights who say . . . GOO!".

I plan to draw another design inspired by Monty Python's Holy Grail: I Fart in your General Direction and a couple inspired by Monty Python's Flying Circus: I Don't Like Spam and Ministry of Silly Walks. Check Little Characters to see when they're available.

Bring Out Your . . . Stuff for Real Monty Python Fans!

This stuff will probably only appeal to people who are already obsessed like me.

When the world grows weary of you shouting out, "From now on, I want you to call me Loretta" or "Tell us again how sheep's bladder can be used to prevent earthquakes" or "My hovercraft is full of eels", you can go be amongst others of your own kind at pythonline.com.

UU Gifts Blog
This blog is a place for me to showcase my designs, and also to record more detail about my design process, my experiences as a business owner and my perspectives on the finished artwork. An excerpt is included on this page.
Baby Nicknames T-Shirts, Onesies, and Bibs
This blog showcases all my unique drawings of baby nicknames. Why settle for clipart designs for Little Pumpkin and Peanut when you can have beautiful art? Check out my selection of adorable onesies, T-shirts, and bibs for nicknames like Munchkin, Silly Goose, Fusspot, Little Sweetpea, and Buddha Belly. They make original baby shower gifts.
Obama Baby Clothes
This blog focuses on my designs for Little Democrats. I'm a proud Obama Mama, and in the name of fairness and diversity, I have created some baby clothes for Little Republicans, too, but honestly I'm more committed to creating cute onesies and T-shirts that show support for our new president.
Jewish Baby Clothes
I do my best to make my store and business a reflection of my values whenever possible, and I believe strongly in celebrating religious diversity. I think there is a real lack of onesies for babies' first holidays in the Jewish tradition, and I have created a great selection.
Christian Baby Clothes
This blog is not only a showcase for my own baby clothes, but my favorite Christian onesies and T-shirts from other online designers. Come here for pictures and my reviews of the best infant apparel for the littlest members of your flock.
Life of Cai: Misadventures of a Wonderful Toddler (as recorded by his Mumma)
This blog is a sort of free approach to scrapbooking and a Gratitude journal focused on parenting. I'm using it to capture little stories about what my son does and says before I forget them all. The focus is on him. An excerpt is included on this page.

My Favorite Movies

Sappy and Happy!

If you only knew that I had blue hair and loved shouting along to Rage Against the Machine, you would probably be very surprised at this list. I like a lot of movies, but the movies I love are the ones that make me cry big joyful tears at how good life can be.

Worthwhile Charities

This image is an original drawing by child artist, Hannah. I hope it encourages you to follow your heart and follow these links.

Doctors Without Borders effectively gets doctors and medicine where they're most needed. You don't have to be a bleeding heart liberal to want to prevent kids from dying of diarrhea.

Heifer International really makes it fun to be generous. You get to pick out animals to help poor families become self-reliant. One of my favorite wedding gifts was a donation of rabbits (quite appropriate!)

The Human Rights Campaign is appropriately named, because LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) issues are human rights issues. Join me in standing on the side of love.

The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee is a group that is guided by religious values but does not use any donations to fund proselytizing.

The Pajama Program donates pajamas and bedtime books to kids and teens who really need them. You can read more about this fantastic charity at Kab's Pajama Program Lens.
