The Joys of Kicksledding

Kicksledding is pure joy and turns nearly all sledders into mountain boys and girls. Gliding along on hard-packed snow or ice seems effortless (though its actually good exercise) and you get to take your sweetheart or young one along too.

We were first introduced to kicksledding when we took part in our local Christmas Parade as part of our Sons of Norway lodge. As part of our decor for the float, we had teams of kids on kicksleds alongside the float. They were a great hit and helped to assure us a 2nd place finish in the Mayor's Award category.

The Mountain Boy Double Kicksled is made to last for generations. This heirloom-style, hand-crafted interpretation of a traditional Norwegian kicksled combines the joy of sledding with aerobic exercise. Because each kicksled is a one-of-a-kind work, each is signed and numbered on the bottom by the sledmaker. Rings are welded to the front of each runner so a harness can be attached for dogsledding.

The body, including a slatted seat long enough to accommodate two children, is made of American white ash. The handle is a willow branch, hand-carved for a perfect fit and polished to show its natural beauty. Red-stained hand rails keep children in and allow them to maintain a firm grip. A copper footrest is light, strong, and sets off the wood tones of the sled. As it ages, the copper gains a fine patina.

Runners are powder-coated flexible steel, with polished and waxed edges. Screws are stainless steel. Bolts are anodized steel. Multiple coats of UV-resistant finish allow the sled be left outside for extended periods without damage. On the kicksled's back, an elasticized storage compartment provides space for a sweater or lunch box.

The kicksled measures 72 inches long x 36 inches high x 24 inches wide, weighs 17 pounds, and supports 300 pounds. Removable nuts at the front of each runner allow the kicksled to be collapsed and transported on top of a vehicle. It carries a 1-year warranty against defects. Assembly (instructions included) is easy.
