Kid-Friendly Dinner Parties

Bring the Kids Too...
Increasingly, an evening dinner party among friends includes kids, and if your fare for the evening was going to be a selection of grilled foods, choosing dishes the smaller members of your guest list might enjoy without comprising the overall quality of your meal can be a bit difficult. The best approach to this all-too-common situation, though, is multi-faceted.
Only the Beginning
Drinks and appetizers are typically the best way to begin any evening, and that doesn't have to change because the kids are coming. While you're selecting cocktails and wines that perfectly compliment your menu, choose age appropriate drinks for them too. You may even want to go with some fun choices like slushes and smoothies. You should make certain you prepare a few extra appetizer choices kids will enjoy, even if it means adding simple selections like tapas with toppings the kids will enjoy or a vegetable tray.
Choose Some Dishes With Kid Friendly Ingredients
Grilled squab, Ahi tuna, or choices like Portobello steaks probably aren't going to make any child's top ten list, but you don't have to forego all of your menu selections just to please your youngest guests. The key is to select a few dishes that contain kid-friendly ingredients that adults will love too. One fairly easy way to do that is to incorporate new ingredients into standard kid favorites. Bison burgers, for instance, are one method of serving a food kids will instantly connect with while still tackling a culinary challenge. Grilled pizzas with creative toppings are another, as not only can you include options just for the adults with these kinds of dishes, but you can easily add a cheese and pepperoni choice to the grill grate while you're working on something for the adults. Keep in mind that including just one or two dishes that the younger set will eat is enough. You don't have to prepare an entirely separate menu for them.
Dessert May Be Your Most Important Course
Kids love desserts of many varieties, and as a result, this may be the single most important course you serve. Kid-friendly desserts are far easier to build than entire meals, and while tiramisu may not be a top choice, there are a number of fantastic grilled dessert options that could be. Grilled fruit kebabs, for instance, are certain to be a hit among all of your guests, no matter what their age. Taking things one step further with a kid-classic with a new twist like a grilled banana split, is an excellent way to involve everyone in the last course of your meal.
Final Thoughts
One final note, check with your guests to ensure their children don't have any food allergies before you get started. While adults often have the foresight to understand what is in each dish, therefore avoiding a selection if it might be a problem, children sometimes do not, and it can prove disastrous.
Dinner parties that are adults only are certainly fun, but sometimes, nothing outranks a little family time with friends, and watching the children have fun together on an outdoor play center from the comfort of your deck can make for an excellent evening.
