What Happened to Jaycee Lee Dugard?

On June 10th, 1991, eleven year old Jaycee Lee Dugard was walking to her school bus stop in South Lake Tahoe, California. She never made it there. Carl Probyn, Jaycee's step-father was in his garage and saw a car swerve over to Jaycee, open the door and pull her in. She screamed. Mr Probyn didn't have his car keys so he jumped on his mountain bike and gave chase. He couldn't catch up to them so he went back home and called 911. That was the last time anyone saw Jaycee for the next 18 years. We lived in South Lake Tahoe during that time and over the next several years we often heard about Jaycee on the news. There would be at least 1500 leads that didn't pan out. It was if she had vanished into thin air.

Where is Jaycee?

Jaycee Lee Dugard
This is the photo of Jaycee that I most remember seeing on posters and t-shirts around South Lake Tahoe.

Carl Probyn gave a description of the car and of the female passenger in the car. We remember seeing posters with the drawing of the car and the woman. They knew it was a couple, which they said was unusual. Usually it is men who do kidnapping, not women and not a couple. The poster gave the impression that they knew who these people were because it mentioned that the man was a convicted sex offender. My husband and I remember standing outside of Raley's at the "Y" looking at the poster and wondering that since they knew he was a sex offender why couldn't they find him?

Looking for Jaycee

Carl Probyn (Step-Father) a Suspect for a long time.

Jaycee Lee Dugard KidnappingThere were massive manhunts for Jaycee and her captors. Police went door to door asking questions of Tahoe residents in the area of the kidnapping. There was a hotline for people to call in tips. I once heard a psychic say that she saw Jaycee's body in a graveled area.
Carl Probyn, Jaycee's step-father, was a suspect and says his life was "Hell" for many years because many people thought he was guilty, including some of his family members. There were rumors that he sold Jaycee into slavery in Central America to pay off drug debts. Law enforcement dug up the yard of the Probyn's South Lake Tahoe home looking for Jaycee. He was the last one to see Jaycee before her disappearance. He took several lie detector tests. A lengthy police investigation turned up nothing and his name was cleared but suspicion remained. The long ordeal broke up his marriage.

Parents Become Cautious

Children who knew Jaycee were fearful

Jaycee's kidnapping caused a shift in people's thinking in South Lake Tahoe. Parents did not let their children go to that bus stop any more. They didn't let the kids walk to school. Some of the children who knew Jaycee or went to school with her became fearful that they might be taken.

At that time our children were were ages one, two and four. Having this kidnapping happen in our own backyard caused us to be more protective as our children grew up than we might otherwise have been. Our house backed up to an elementary school and a few years after Jaycee's kidnapping there was an attempted abduction at this school. A lot of Tahoe children of that time grew up being on a very short leash.

South Lake Tahoe embraces Jaycee Lee Dugard

Jaycee touched the heart of South Lake Tahoe

The Tahoe community came together and prayed and held vigils for Jaycee. There were many fundraisers and poster making sessions for Jaycee. Terry Probyn, Jaycee's mom, was very proactive in this. Jaycee's 5th grade classmates at Meyers Elementary School planted a garden for her and tied a pink ribbon on her chair. There was a $40,000 reward for her return. On the 10th anniversary of her abduction there was a "Pink Parade." Mrs. Probyn had moved to southern California by this time but she came back to Tahoe for the parade.
I always wondered why Jaycee didn't call home if she was alive. She was 11 and certainly old enough to call if she could get to a phone. On August 27, 2009 it became clear as to why she never called home. That was the day we heard that Jaycee had surfaced after 18 years.

Jaycee Is found 18 years later.

Her captors - Phillip and Nancy Garrido

Phillip GarridoThe break in this case came when Philllip Garrido was on the campus of UC Berkely seeking permission to hand out informational materials. He had two young girls with him and the security officer thought there was something not quite right about him and the girls. She reported him and he was called in to a meeting with his parole officer. He took Jaycee and the two young girls to this meeting and Jaycee revealed her true identity.
Jaycee is now 29 years old and the two young girls are her daughters, fathered by her captor, Phillip Garrido. Jaycee's mother flew up from southern California and she, Jaycee, Jaycee's daughers and Jaycee's aunt were sequestered in a secret hotel room away from public scrutiny to get to know each other again. I read that they have now been moved to a secret house under guard by the FBI. The family wishes to keep Jaycee and her daughters out of the media spotlight for now.

Jaycee Remembers Everything

Jaycee Lee Dugard and her daughters are in good health

Jaycee's first words to her mother were, "Hi Mom. I have babies." Terry Probyn asked, "How many babies do you have." Jaycee remembers her family and her childhood and has spoken with her mother about things that only Jaycee could have known. The family doesn't think a DNA test is necessary.

Jaycee's daughters did not know that she was their mother. They thought she was their older sister. Nor did they know that their father, Phillip Garrido had kidnapped Jaycee and held her in captivity all those years. In fact, they were upset that their father had been put in jail. None of the girls had been to school or to a doctor, although all seemed to be in good health.

Garrido ran a printing business out of his home and apparently Jaycee helped a lot with that. She was the graphic designer and communicated with customers on the phone and via email. Customers who met with her thought she was Garrido's daughter named "Alissa."

In a press conference with Jaycee Dugard's aunt, Tina Dugard, it was learned that Jaycee taught her daughters to read and write using the internet. One daughter is named Angel and it is unclear exactly what the other girl's name is. I've read in varying places that it is Star, Starlet, Starlit, or Starlight.

Jaycee Lee Dugard and her daughters were kept hidden

A backyard within a back yard.

Nancy GarridoIt was learned that Phillip and Nancy Garrido kept Jaycee hidden in a series of run down shacks and tents in a fenced back yard within a back yard where large trees hid the compound from view. Electricity was provided with an extension cord that ran out from the house. There was a camp toilet and a rudimentary shower for sanitation. Trash and debris were piled everywhere. Also found in the back yard was the car matching the description that Carl Probyn had given to the police 18 years ago.

They say she would have done anything he asked her to. Nancy Garrido, the woman some say is the "real monster," faces the same 29 charges and life imprisonment as her husband Phillip Garrido in the 1991 abduction of 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard.

A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard

A memoir about Jaycee's 18 years in captivity

A Stolen Life: A Memoir

Jaycee's story in her own words. Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped in 1991 at the age of 11. For the next 18 years she was held captive in a run down compound behind the house of Phillip Garrido in Antioch, California. She bore him two daughters before she surfaced 18 years later.
Jaycee did not use a ghost writer for this book. It has already soared to the top of the bestseller lists. Jaycee will be reading the audio version of the book herself as well.
I found this book to be very sad. That a girl so young had to be subjected to such depravity and learn the facts of life in such a brutal way is heartbreaking. The fact that law enforcement overlooked her time and time again is deplorable. She is a survivor and I'm thrilled that she has been reunited with her mom. Perhaps now Jaycee and her family can find some peace and happiness together.

South Lake Tahoe Residents Remember the time of Jaycee's Kidnapping

Looking back to Jaycee's abduction

South Lake Tahoe residents remember frantic time of Jaycee Lee Dugard's abduction
At the pine-studded Lake Tahoe neighborhood where Jaycee Lee Dugard was snatched while walking to school, Thursday was much like the sunny summer day when the crime occurred 18 years ago.
But this time, talk among neighbors was laced not with horror but joy and surprise over an unexpected turn of events. No one really thought this story would end this way.
"To have someone disappear like that and then be found, it's just awesome," said Debbie Tuttle, 45.
Tuttle well remembers how the kidnapping affected residents of the South Lake Tahoe area. There was fear, the frantic searching, prayers and candlelight vigils for the little girl in pink.
"It had this town in an uproar," Tuttle said.
Jaycee Lee Dugard's teacher, principal look back on kidnapping
Jaycee Lee Dugard was abducted June 10, 1991, and the event shook the South Shore community.

"It was the worst day of my 27 years (in the education profession) the morning Jaycee Lee was kidnapped," said Karen Gillis-Tinlin, who was principal at Meyers Elementary School at the time.

Dugard was a fifth-grader at the school.

"She was just a sweetie," Bush said. "It scared the kids, and it scared them badly."

All the students and staff members wore pink ribbons the week Dugard was kidnapped. They tied more to the fence by the kindergarten room, and put them up around the school. Pink was her favorite color, Bush said.

"We tied a pink ribbon to her chair, and kept her desk the way she left it," Bush said.

South Lake Tahoe Celebrates Jaycee's Return

From NBC Bay Area

"Some knew her, others only knew of her. But they will never forget the day 18 years ago when the blonde, blue-eyed 11-year-old was snatched in broad daylight on her way to a bus stop.

Her scream. A frantic sprint on a mountain bike by her stepfather up the twisted mountain road as he tried to catch up to the Ford Granada and the unknown man and woman who had just ripped his family's lives to shreds before his eyes.

A world renown tourist destination, South Lake Tahoe on the Nevada-California line is dominated in summer by gamblers, boaters and beach goers. In winter, by gamblers, skiers and snowboarders.

But beneath the facade of a tourist town, where workers come and go with each passing season, is a tight-knit community that never forgot Jaycee Lee Dugard, a little girl who loved the color pink..."

5 Cats, 2 Dogs, 3 Cockatiels, a Pigeon and a Mouse

The woman who was held captive since being kidnapped 18 years ago wants her five cats, two dogs, three cockatiels, a pigeon and a mouse returned to her, said a Contra Costa County animal services official.

"We are going to do everything we can to help facilitate that," said Lt. Joe DeCosta, adding the animals are in good condition, and most have been placed in temporary homes until Dugard, 29, and her two daughters can reclaim them.

The animals have been in protective custody since they were found Aug. 27 after authorities began searching the Antioch property of Phillip and Nancy Garrido.

A happy resolution for Jaycee

The 11 year old little girl who loved pink has now returned as a 29 year old mother of two. She and her daughters have led a sheltered life having not seen a doctor or attended school during their lives with the Garridos. Now the three of them will have to reintegrate into society. Jaycee has certainly been through an ordeal and so has her family. We rejoice with her family and friends that she is alive and reunited with the ones who love her.

Very sad story, indeed. I'm glad she's finally getting to live her life and try to put this all behind her. I have three kids, and I don't know how her poor mother survived the mental torture of not knowing all those years, that would be absolutely excruciating.
