Put Your Old Yarn Stash to Good Use!
I hear it all the time: "I used to crochet when I was younger!" or "My mom taught me how to knit when I was a kid." What made you give up? Too hard? Too busy? Too boring?
My mom did teach me to knit when I was younger, and a few years later she taught me the basics of crocheting. I would start a project and take two years to finish it. I bought all the gadgets and collected yarn from thrift stores and yard sales. I'd buy pattern books and think about the next gift I was going to create or craft item I would design for around the home.
Finally, after years of just dabbling, I became heavily involved in a project called "Kidney Afghans For Kids" and now my yarn, my skills, and my free time all have a purpose!
Alan Patterson is an old friend of mine, and in 2006 he underwent a kidney transplant (successfully, praise God!). He picked up crocheting again while he was recovering, something his older sister had taught him when he was a child. One day while he and I were chatting on the phone, he developed this idea: What if he collected knitted and crocheted afghan squares from different people, stitched them into blankets, and gave them to children on hemodialysis? It was such a simple idea. They would be Healing Prayer Afghans designed in children's sizes and colors that would be given to kids with chronic renal problems to help keep them warm during dialysis.
The project started on Alan's 30th birthday, March 22, 2008. Since then, dozens of contributors from all over the United States have knitted or crocheted afghan squares to the project. I serve as the volunteer coordinator for the whole state of Florida. I'm also one of the volunteers that pieces the squares together into finished afghans.

Here's How It Works
Follow these simple instructions to join in this wonderful ministry. What a great way to put your yarn stash, your talent, and your free time to work!
- 1Use only 100% 4-ply worsted weight acrylic yarn (hypo-allergenic and mothproof), any color or variegation (the blankets are for kids, so the more colorful, the better!)
- 2Use any size needles or hooks, and any afghan square pattern, to make 6"x6" or 8"x8" squares
- 3Use up your yarn stash or your grandma's. Recruit friends, make a weekly get-together event out of square-making
- 4Take yarn and patterns with you as you travel. You're not making a whole blanket or a big project, so the stuff you use remains compact and easy to transport!
- 5Pray. Pray for the children to be healed of their sickness. Pray for their families to be comforted and encouraged. Pray for their family finances, as they travel back and forth to doctors, hospitals and dialysis clinics.
- 6Send your completed square(s) to A Life In Christ, ATTN: AFGHANS, 1404 Del Prado Blvd S, Suite 165, Cape Coral FL 33990
- 7Make more squares
- 8A Life In Christ accepts donations of yarn, hooks, needles, pattern books, and money that is used for Shipping afghans to children across the country. Receipts available upon request for tax purposes. A Life In Christ is a tax-exempt church incorporated in the state of Florida.
Tips and Tricks
For making squares
Here's a tip: if you don't have a ruler handy but you're making a 6"x6" square, just measure it against a $1 bill! USD currency is 6" long exactly.
Here's a tip: Many patterns can be made to 5 1/2" square instead of 6"x6", and then fill in the last 1/2" by putting a single crochet border around the edge (evenly spaced stitches across plus 3 sc in each corner). This gives the square a finished look, and expands your selection of patterns to include ones that naturally come out a little shy of the 6" mark!

Matisse's story
One of our afghan recipients
Here's a great article about a little girl from New Zealand who received one of our afghans. She survived a multiple organ transplant. Please pray for the donor's family, who are celebrating their 2nd Christmas in 2011 without their own child, whose life made Matisse's survival possible. ! http://www.parade.com/news/2011/12/the-girl-who-couldnt-eat.html

Let Me Double Check: How can I get involved?
Now that you've seen the lens and learned about the project, you might be asking what you can do to join the cause. Here's a list of simple ways to help Kidney Afghans for Kids.

- 2Use your stash for good, part two: If you have a lot of yarn that you won't be using for any projects, box it up and send it to KAFK c/o1404 Del Prado Blvd S, Suite 165, Cape Coral FL 33990. Include your name and address inside so we can send you a thank you!

- 4Tell one other person about the project. Call a hospital administrator, a clergy person, a civic leader, a local dialysis clinic, or a friend you know with kidney problems Help us raise awareness.
- 5Pray. Every day, take a few minutes and pray for children and adults battling kidney diseases or disorders. Consider sending a contribution to NephCure Foundation, the National Kidney Foundation, the HealthWell Foundation, or another kidney-related charity as a way of showing your support for those with unhealthy kidneys.
