AreWeThereYet? AreWeThereYet? AreWeThereYet?

Does the mere prospect of taking your kids with you on a long car journey make your teeth chatter?

Bored, restless children can make road trips even more stressful, as they squirm, fight among themselves and become general pains in the neck.

That need not be the case, however, if you come up with simple solutions and ideas that will keep their minds engaged. With a little planning, you can actually turn a long, boring car trip into a fun experience for all of you!

1. HELLO, GAMEBOY!

Allow the kids to bring along their Gameboy, iTouch or other hand-held game and entertainment consoles. Games have been distracting kids since the beginning of their existence!

It's a sure-fire method to keep children entertained!

Before you know it, they will be so quiet and absorbed in the activity that you'll have to turn around to check if they're still there.

2. TRAVEL WITH TOYS

Toys are especially good to take if you have young children. Bring their favorite toys on the trip for them to play with.

Having something familiar with them makes them feel more comfortable.

You can also surprise them with new, interesting toys and let them discover how to use and play with them while you make your way to the desired destination in peace. There are many toys designed specifically to keep children entertained while traveling.

These would make a great addition to your "car trip" arsenal.

Of course, you can make it even more fun by joining in! Go ahead and belt out your best Mariah Carey impression.

6. READ ME A STORY, PLEASE

Want the kids to settle down and even be lulled into taking a nap? If you're taking this trip with a spouse or relative that can handle the driving for you, bring along your children's favorite books and read them a story to calm them down.

If you're driving, that won't be possible, of course - but don't worry because there are also children's books on tape or CD that can do the trick.

Listening to stories should make your children feel more relaxed and provide you with some well-needed peace and quiet from your little sweeties.
