Arts and crafts with kids is a great way to spend time with your kids. Your kids don't even realize that they might even be learning something while they are having fun.
Pumpkin Carving Patterns
I highly recommend getting proper pumpkin carving tools. We could not find ours this year and I used a vegetable knife to carve an owl (or as my son calls it - a hoot-hoot pumpkin) pattern. My fingers were cramped up for quite some time and it took much longer to carve than if I had our pumpkin knife.
Happy (and safe) Carving!
- CarvingPumpkins.com
- Over 150 downloadable patterns with tons of different categories. There are tips on pumpkin carving as well.
- DLTK's Crafts for Kids
- They've got over two dozen different designs that are perfect for young kids. Not too hard and they are not too spooky for the youngsters.
- Hormel Foods Pumpkin Patterns
- Hormel foods has a half-dozen real cute pumpkin carving designs. They are almost retro in appearance. Simple designs means that we adults should not have too much trouble "assisting" the younger ones.

- Make a watering can
- You will only need a half-gallon milk jug, a nail, and some markers, stickers, or paints for decoration.
- Make a hovercraft for $.05
- All it takes are two styrofoam cups, masking tape, and four medium rubber bands. Check it out!
- Make your own Playdough (Play-Doh)
- When I was a kid I loved Play-Doh. I couldn't pronounce it very well - I called it pah-doo.
Anyway, this recipe lets you make your own custom colors.
You will need:
2 cups flour
2 cups warm water
1 cup salt
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
1 Tablespoon cream of tartar (optional for improved elasticity) - Customized Printable Bookmarks
- You can choose from an array of different themes and either print the bookmarks in color or black and white. I recommend printing them in black and white so your kids can color and decorate them as they see fit.
- Make your own chalkboard paint
- If you want a custom color for your chalkboard paint here is a recipe for making it yourself.
