Raising Rich Kids, Even if you're poor

Moneymanagement is a learned skill. If you give a cave man a wad of cash, he'd probably eat with it. A smarter one might wipe his... anyway. Learning to build wealth is an important skill for young people. Having money undoubtedly makes life easier. Money is the #1 thing married people fight about and, most people believe that money is the only thing standing between them & their dreams.

I believe that, as parents, one of the most important things we can do is to raise our children without financial struggles. By sharing our money woes with kids, we're just TEACHING them to stress over money and complain about it.

I was raised by divorced parents. One of them is a money magnet while the other repels money. I've decided to raise my kids to be money magnets, by listening intently to my "money magnet" parent's advice and learning from the wealthy, rather than the poor.

One thing we're doing in our house is having open and honest discussions about money and immersing ourselves in financial literacy texts. The Uncle Eric books and the Robert Kiyosaki books are some of our favorites, I've reviewed them below.

I found another curriculum, that's distributed for free, from the Federal Reserve. Just for kicks, we downloaded it and plan to compare what they're teaching to what the "real" books are teaching.

So far I'm a big fan of Uncle Eric.

The Chicago Federal Reserve, in addition to housing a money museum which offers free virtual and real-life tours, also has a Free Money Management Course for Kids which includes a 360 degree virtual tour of the federal reserve.

The Jump$tart Coalition for financial literacy has a free clearinghouse of financial educational materials for download as well as a monthly calendar of "12 financial principles everyone should know" and monthly teacher's guides to help convey those principles.

Uncle Eric Books

The Uncle Eric series of financial education books

These books are awesome. The "Letters to Chris" thing is a little annoying at first, but the entire series is well done and can be used with kids as young as ten, I'd say.

Check out the Uncle Eric Bookstore (just get the whole 11 book set, you won't regret it. I wish I had learned half as much about economics when I was in school)

Financial Planning for Teens

Helping teens understand how money works.

A lot of parents, myself included, have no business giving financial advice to their teens. It's my plan that they grow up wiser than I have. in fact, Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad, Poor Dad was based on the same principle. What do wealthy people teach their kids about money that poor people don't? Why is it that some families struggle with finances from generation to generation while other families seem to prosper? It's not a coincidence, it's because they know how to manage money. The best hope a struggling family can give their kids is a solid financial foundation.

Rich Kid, Poor Kid

Robert Kiyosaki's Lessons

Robert Kiyosaki was raised by a poor man who spent his life working for "the man" and died with nothign to show for it. Luckily, he had a wealthy friend and spent time with his father, too. The contrast between the way his "rich dad" discussed money and the way his "poor dad" discussed money was startling. Kiyosaki's life experiences in business helped him understand even further why poor people are teaching their kids the wrong thing about money. His first book, Rich Dad Poor Dad, speaks to adults in a very easy to read format and another book, Rich Dad Poor Dad for Teens speaks directly to young people, offering "secrets about money that you don't learn in school."

If you've read Rich Dad's Rich Kid, Smart Kid: Giving Your Children a Financial Headstart, I'd really like to hear a review. Amazon has some, but I wonder how much new information is there. I plan to order this book as soon as my Amazon credits build up again, so I'll have a review posted here soon.
