A really fun business that's easy to learn for teens is a face painting business. Once you learn some basic techniques, you can make yourself available for a fee for birthday parties, corporate picnics and parties, vendor events, open houses, grand openings at restaurants and other kid friendly places.

With very little overhead (just the basic supplies) and a good instructional book, this is one of those entrepreneurial businesses that you can get going quickly.

5 Lessons your kids will learn

by starting their own business

Kids need to be kids and enjoy their time as children. But, at the same time, as they get older, they also need to learn to make money and function in our society as responsible adults.

Oftentimes, they get a job at a Burger Joint, where they learn how to listen to a boss, and how to work with others, but then they may also have to give up some extracurricular activities, study time and time with family. Not terrible things, but enough of a challenge that many families are helping their kids start their own businesses.

Why? Let's compare the lessons your kid is learning working at a burger joint verses starting a business.

1. Responsibility.

Burger Joint: Yes, it teaches responsibility. You need to show up for work and do a good job or your boss and co-workers will get mad at you.

Entrepreneur: Teaches you responsibility as well. You need to work hard or you won't get paid.

Traits of an Entrepreneur

Does your child have these? Maybe he's ready to start his own business...

Sometimes you can just tell ... the way a child talks, acts, interacts with his peers and those older than him - you just know that he's got that entrepreneurial blood in there.

Other kids, however, may not show it as obviously - so here are some things to be on the look out for if you'd like to start your child off in their own business:

1. Initiative - does your child jump in and just do things or does he wait to be asked?

2. Dedication - Once he starts a job or project, does he stay to the task until it's done?

3. Persistence - does he continue to push through to finish something, even though it's hard?

4. Creativity and vision - is he always thinking of new ways to do thing, trying out other options or looking ahead to what else can be done?

This is just a small list to start but some key things that may clue you in to an entrepreneur in the making.

And, if you don't see these qualities in your child, start to encourage and train these traits in them by talking about them and working through issues with them in mind.

Hire your kids in your family business

Did you know you can hire your kids in your business?

If your kids are between the ages 7-17, you can hire them to do tasks in your business, and pay them a wage, just like you would any other employee.

The benefit of hiring your kids is that you don't have to pay payroll taxes on them!

In addition, your family may realize some significant tax savings by shifting income from the parents to the children.

This is a great tax planning strategy for parents who have their own business.
