Healthy and Quick Lunchbox Suggestions

The most important aspect of packing a healthy kids lunchbox is variety. Variety is key to healthy eating, so provide small servings and many choices in your child's school lunch. Providing your child with plenty of variety for their lunch is really not hard. Many lunch foods can be prepared, in advance, so just think ahead. Dinner leftovers, sometimes make delicious school lunches, too.
For simple and fast lunchbox meals, simply fill up small containers with a variety of different foods. Quick lunchbox food suggestions include the following:
- For variety, you could roll up meats, cheeses, and veggies into a tortilla or stuff them into a pita pocket.
- Cut up carrot sticks and include a little Tupperware container of ranch dressing, hummus, or veggie dip.
- Fresh fruit - apples, oranges, tangerines, nectarines (easy, easy).
- Protein or nutrition bars (pricey, but guilt-reducing).
- Make your child a nice sample tray by taking half an egg carton and lining each cup with aluminum foil (optional but this will keep the contents from spilling). Put a hardboiled egg in one, a handful of peanuts in another, dried fruit in a third, cheese crackers in the fourth, and so on.
- Instead of one boring sandwich, pack four little sandwiches.
- Juice box or pouch.
- Applesauce (no sugar).
- Cheese cubes or string cheese.
- Add a small baggie of trail mix, mixing their favorite cereal, nuts, and raisins.
- Hard-boiled eggs.
- Dried fruit is readily available at the supermarkets, and make excellent lunchbox food. Dried fruit like apricots, cranberries, raisins, and mangos are both yummy and sweet.
- Put a taco shell and a few small containers of things like chopped tomatoes, cooked meat, cheese, or chopped lettuce and let your child's lunch be make-your-own tacos.
- Bags of mini muffins, cookies, and crackers also make good lunchbox treats. Rice krispie treats are now available packaged and ready to pop in the lunchbox, as well.

- These are wonderful tips, especially for busy mom's! I have to admit that when I'm at home alone I skip things sometimes. For instance I was going to make a sandwich wrap one day, but I get tired of bread, tortillas and so forth...I ended up wrapping my sandwich in a large leaf of romain lettuce...won't work in a packed lunch but it worked for me.

- Great tips! I always look for ways to make lunch fun for my kids, especially since my son has food allergies, so buying a lunch at school isn't even an option for him.
