Teaching Kids through Games

One of the easiest ways to teach children is through games. They can learn many of the life skills that they will need as adults, and have fun at the same time.

We are going to take a look at two common types of games that teach essential life skills: makeover games and cooking games.

Learning All about Makeup

Without causing a mess

One of the things I've noticed is the father of a young girl is her fascination with my wife when she is putting on makeup. You can usually find her as in the bathroom with my wife watching her in wonder.

It wasn't until we noticed that she was being really quiet and we found her in the bathroom with lipstick all over her face that it was time to find her some makeover games to play. We had seen them before on the Internet and thought that it would be a great way for her to learn without making a big mess.

After trying out the games online she expressed an interest in learning more as well is trying in real life. Since she is only five, we didn't think that it was a good idea, so we went to the store to see if we could find something that would fit her age and curiosity about makeup.

After a bit of searching, we came across a doll that would allow her to dress her up however she pleased as well as do her makeup and draw on her face. If she decided that she didn't like the results of the face that she had made, she would just be able to wash off the face with a damp cloth.

This doll has been her pride and joy for the past few months now, and it is great. Now, when her mother does her makeup, she is in the bathroom with her doll doing it to.

Playing House Is One of My Children's Favorite Pastimes

Makeovers and cooking games are on the menu

One of the favorite activities for my children to do during afternoon is playing house. We have everything they need including a play kitchen, dress-up clothes and plastic food.

Depending on the day, you can find my children cooking up a storm with their homemade cooking games. Not only does is give them the opportunity to express their creativity when it comes to creating a meal, but it gives him the opportunity to be the mom and dad in their make-believe world.

It is interesting to see some of the concoctions but they come up with for meals that they come over to feed me with. For example, my daughter has brought me a broccoli sandwich, and my son may be a nice glass of hamburger juice. You may try and hold your laughter in, but quite frankly sometimes it slips out.

We found a lot of the cooking supplies for our children at garage sales, and that's our local discount store. Santa has made some contributions to my children's kitchen as well and there seems to be a never-ending supply of meals that can be created.

What I like best about my children playing house and cooking plain meals is that they're getting valuable insights into what is involved with respect food preparation as an adult. Sure they won't be making any broccoli sandwiches when they are older but playing the cooking games that they do get is an inspiration and interest in cooking.
