Sooner or later a special event gives the opportunity for father and son to dress in matching neckties. Finding a tie that fits your son may be alot more difficuly than it initially seems. How long of a tie would you need? What about the width of the tie? At what age can your son wear daddy's length ties? Are clip-on kids ties better than the ones you tie yourself? Where can I find kids ties? All these questions will be answered in this lens that is dedicated to neck and bow ties for kids.

Type of Kids Ties

What is better suited: Bow Tie or Necktie? Well, it certainly depends on the occasion. Bow ties are usually much more formal while neckties add more of gentleman's business look. Besides choosing between bow tie and necktie, there is the option between a pre-tied clip on tie and a self-tied necktie. What is great about clip on ties is that they are easier to wear and much safer - since they are not worn around the neck and eliminate the risk of cooking while playing. Self-tied neckties have the benefit of being much more versatile. The length of the tie can be adjusted ensuring teh perfect fitting tie.

Self Tied or Clip-On Ties for Kids

Both have advantages and disadvantages. The pros for self-tied neckties is that the length can be adjusted to fit a wide range of ages and heights. A 47 inch (untied length) kids tie will fit children between the ages 5 and 10. Also great about the self-tied kids tie is that you have the chance to teach your son to tie a tie from an early age on. It will be a skill that will be useful for the rest of his life.

Clip-on kids ties have the benefit that they are a bit safer. They are the better choice when there is no adult supervision. Clip-on ties eliminate the risk of accidental choking. For that reason most ties worn as part of a school uniform are the clip-on style.

Custom Made Kids Ties

If you have been searching for a kids tie that matches an adult tie exactly then you will find that your choices are quite limited. Most designers do not make their ties in a kids size. Even large online retailers that give the option of custom made neckties most likely won't be able to accommodate making one single custom tie. Most custom neckties require you to purchase a min. of 20 ties. Unless you have 20 kids this will not make sense.

But, before you change the entire outfit there is another option. Simply buy one more adult length tie and bring it to a local tailor. Most kids ties have a length of 46-48 inches and a width of 2.25-2.5 inches. Simply tell your tailor to use the fabric of the adult tie and re sow it to these dimensions. Chances are that it will cost less than $20 to get this made.
