Should Kids Be Allowed A Facebook Account?

Should Parents Allow Kids Under Age 13 To Have Monitored Accounts On Facebook?

Should kids under the age of 13 be allowed on Facebook? When I first wrote this page, I believed that it was fine to allow younger kids on Facebook and other social networks in a supervised setting. After reading some of the persuasive arguments presented here, I have changed my mind. I still think many younger kids are quite responsible, and more teachable at a younger age - more willing to listen to parents about safety concerns. However, there is the issue of honesty and the message we send to our children about the acceptability of lying about their age, and then who knows what else.
Officially, kids must wait until they are 13 to get a Facebook account. But how many do? Should kids be allowed to go on Facebook? Should they be supervised? Here is your chance to have your say.

Should Kids Under 13 Be On Facebook?

Add your opinions here:

Here is your opportunity to tell me what you think. Do you believe that kids under age 13 should be allowed a Facebook account? That the actual age decision should be up to the parents. The rule is arbitrary and silly. With supervision, you can still have control over who they friend, what they publicize, and they can learn the dangers in a safe environment.
Or, Rules are rules. The internet is a dangerous place and kids need restrictions.

No way! Kids that age are way to young to have an account. What are they going to do on there anyways... Chat with people they don't know? It's one thing if they're 14 and up... it's different if they're younger. They have no business being on there that young.

abuno tongabiang clarence says:

no kids under 10-13 years should not be allowed

Lorna says:

No they shouldn't. Police say it is illegal & the rule is their to protect the children. If we let them lie about their age at 10 they won't respect the sex, alcohol & cigarette laws!

I think the rules need to be followed on the age of 13!! However, apparently its not hard to get around that at all since almost all of my grandchildren have accounts and the oldest is 10. He wanted an account to play games and his father signed him up with a bogus birthdate. Since then he's signed up the 2 girls too....mostly doing so to help himself in getting more things in the games.

I don't know what I would say if my kids wanted to have a facebook account. Fortunately, Facebook didn't exist when they were small. I like the non-electronics environment for kids when they are young and creative - why not spend time doing crafts and going out and playing in the sun and riding your bike and helping with the cooking and learning to play an instrument? On the other hand, it is a good time to discuss and form opinions about this stuff, and you can help them understand the ethics and build deeper understanding of life, friendship, and kindness if you go beside them online. But I would still lean towards less electronic time for kids under 12. After that - their development is all about friends, groups, etc., it would be smart not to deny them.

Great topic covered here, I myself don't think its appropriate for children to be on facebook, but I do think that there could be some requirement for a social medium for children at school. Lets face it facebook was created for Harvard students!

Social platforms need an age requirement such as G+ which requires them to be 18. It is hard to monitor kids and since there are a lot of strangers on the web, you shouldn't let your kid talk to them. Most kids have phones so just talking or texting their schoolmates should be good enough.

If you keep your eye on them, possibly giving them X amount of time between X and X hours, the kids can learn the basics of getting around on the web. They'll be doing it for the rest of their lives after all, best that they learn how to handle themselves while you can (still) give them advice. In a few years time they won't listen to you
