I remember as a kid, growing up the son of a home builder my dad would come home with buckets of 2x4 blocks for me. Me and my friends would build things for house. Real hammers, real nails.... real wood blocks. Using your hands and developing skills is something I rarely see these days with children. Kids need to be stimulated....
You put some kids in an area with tools and some construction materials and they jump into action. I remember it as a kid and I see it with my son and his friends. Who can build the highest tower, throw wheels on it and its a car. The imagination kicks in and before you know it, they just spent 2 or 3 hours being creative.
Kids need more of this in their lives.

I also remember all my friends having them also.
Those days they came in a tall metal can that would occasionally substitute as a drum that we would hit with our long lincoln logs. Mom always loved that.
Remember building with the blocks and seeing how high you would go. Or even building a wall and pushing your toy cars through it?
You don;t see those blocks around anymore. Everything is electronic. Electronics is the reason 1/2 of our children can't even do cartwheels or throw a baseball.
Start your kids early and provide them the basics for using their and hands and expressing creativity.

Something I like to buy are wood kits. They are cheap and fun to build. I buy a bunch of different types and when my son has his friends over, they can have fun building their own kit. If its not finished, they can take it home and finish or they can finish it up when they come over again. We always have paint sets lying around so most times they paint their kits.
