SQUIDs, known as Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices, are a fantastic place to start when searching for just the right kids science activities. These devices were invented in 1962 and remain popular today. There are two forms to choose from. The DC SQUIDs have two or more junctions and are more expensive to create. Th RF or AC SQUIDs only have one junction.

The purpose of SQUIDs are to measure very tiny magnetic fields. These type of science projects should be left to the older children with a major vested interest in science. There are plenty of other kids science activities that are less complicated and less expensive, some are even free to perform.

Finding what interests children will help the project be an overwhelming success. Examples of inexpensive science projects are things such as the floating egg experiment. This can be performed using a container, water, an egg, salt, and a spoon. Fill the container with enough water to cover an egg and carefully place the egg in the water. Start adding salt until the egg begins to float. Once the egg is floating, start adding water until it sinks. This science project is based on density.

The floating egg experiment is an easy and cost effective project. However, the student will need to record and explain the results. This is an important step in completing any test. Other projects can be more involved and complicated, like building a working robot or an erupting volcano. Information is a powerful tool when coming up with a science project. Speaking about and researching science facts is quite enlightening.

Did you know giraffes cannot cough and never lie down? Whatever project kids decide upon, let them do the bulk of the work. Guide them and assist if necessary, but they will be proud of the finished project if it came from their own doing.
