Writing Software for Kids - Educational Software for Better Writing

Kids love to use the computer, which is a great reason to have it help you educate your child. Kids' writing software can help improve your child's writing skills, making them better prepared for school.

We've all heard how important it is to read to your child. Reading stories at bedtime or as a practice throughout the day, predisposes children to enjoy the written word. However, it's one thing to enjoy reading and completely another to enjoy writing. This is where most kids struggle.

My Experience

Smart kids don't always enjoy writing

I have an eleven year old son who tests for the talented and gifted program at his school for both math and reading. He's a voracious book reader and loves facts. He's memorized information about science, airplanes, flight, sports, history and more. He reads well above his grade level and absorbs new material like a sponge. However, when it comes to writing, he will do absolutely anything and everything he can to get out of it. As a result, he could not keep up with the tasks in the accelerated classes. In fact, he barely passed his last grade and only summer school kept him from falling further behind.

Why is it that children who love to read hate to write? It's because the link between the two is not as simple as it sounds. Once we teach children to read, the mechanics of writing come into play and, often, this is the part that confuses many children.

Mechanics of Writing

Nuts and bolts

If writing effectively were so easy, we'd all be authors. Obviously, that's not the case but we often think that moving from reading to writing will occur naturally. For some children it does. For others, the whole concept is quite foreign. Unless we break it down and really focus on the various tools used in effective writing, we won't be able to help kids write as well as they should.

Parts of Speech - Verb, noun, pronoun, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection

Forming Sentences - Combing a subject and predicate (a verb or verb phrase)

Word Choice - Expanding vocabulary and classifying words by parts of speech

Voice - Writing from perspective

Organization - Putting sentences together to accurately lead the reader through the idea or thought.

The rules for writing are so much more complex than for reading. Once you know how to read the word "cat", for example, you're done learning that word. Writing about a cat, however, can be tackled in so many different ways and requires planning, creativity, and sometimes even research.

Kids Writing Software Program

Software that does the job

The Story Wizard - Creative Writing Software for Kids is designed to help kids develop better writing skills by guiding them through the writing process. Kids enjoy reading because it's fun. Reading takes them to new places with little effort. Writing requires a lot of thought and because of that, it leaves kids open to self-doubt and procrastination. They need practice, structure, and some guidelines to follow. It doesn't hurt if it's also fun. Remember, kids learn through play and learning doesn't have to be boring.

With Story Wizard, your child will be walked through the writing phase with the objective of creating their own book or story - including a cool book cover!

Importance of Writing Skills

Life-long requirement

I remember being in school, learning Calculus, and thinking, as many of us probably did, "I'll never need to know this when I'm an adult." Rest assured, that's not the case with writing. Including all of the things we type electronically today, think about the number of times a day you need to communicate in writing. Even lists of things to do are a form of communication; a note to yourself of things that need to be done.

Job applications, college applications, college papers, resumes, email and general correspondence are pathways to success. If you're child is unprepared to do these things well, they may not reach their full potential in school, much less in the job market.

According to the Nation's Report Card, the last national assessment of writing skills for 8th grade public school students, showed that 70% of our nation's 8th grade students in public schools were below the score of Proficient. Worse, that score had grown by only a slim margin from the previous report conducted in 2002.

Games and Ideas

My son is doing much better. Once we realized that his challenge was a lack of experience and knowledge about expressing ideas and creativity with words, we've been able to work with him to make significant improvements in not only his ability to write, but his desire to write.

It started with him writing his own story. It's moved on to writing persuasive essays about why I should buy him a cell phone. I'm okay with that, as long as he's writing. Now, he's become my inspiration for a book of our own and he's writing pieces to contribute that are completely mind-blowing. We're having a great time and doing it together.

How do you actually purchase the writing software?

Cole - I'm not sure it's available anymore. This information is from a couple of years ago. You might find alternatives here: http://www.squidoo.com/writing-games-for-kids

I agree, the kids are lacking basic writing skills that are essential for everyday life. I cannot totally blame the education system because how many parents are involved in their kids education. Do parents know the work their children do at school or do they wait to see it at the interviews? I think both parties must work hand in hand to help educate our youth.

This looks wonderful! Sadly, many adults finish high school without the ability to use correct grammar or punctuation. We are failing our children! Will show this software to our daughter-in-law. Thank goodness our grands are still very young, and we can "fill in the gaps"!

I agree with you 100%. I've heard the same thing and now that my oldest is in his second year of high school, I'm realizing those teachers who said that were in denial or completely unaware of what would really happen in the next years. They've never addressed the spelling or writing and it's simply atrocious. How can we expect kids to reach their utmost potential if, as adults, they're going to struggle with writing and spelling? Blows my mind.
