Children with Peanut Allergies

Why are so many children getting peanut allergies nowadays? Researchers are still trying to figure out the answer to that question. Allergies to peanuts are one of the most serious allergies which cause 80% of fatal or near fatal reactions per year.

Allergies to nuts are different than allergies to peanuts due to the fact that peanuts are considered part of the legume family which would included things like lima beans, lentils and peas. They are not considered a nut. Peanuts are actually a plant that has edible seeds enclosed in pods. Theses pods grow underneath the soil.

Unfortunately about 200 people per year die from analyphylatic shock due to peanuts or other types of nuts.

The amount of people developing severe peanut allergies has doubled over the past decaded. 1.5% of the total population has a major sensitivity to peanut products.

What is Anaphylactic Shock?

Anaphylaxis causes several parts of the body to reaction at once. This may occur after skin contact, injection of an allergen, inhalation, or ingestion of a substance that the body sees as a foreign invader. Scientists have discovered 19 peanut products that can trigger anaphylaxis.

People with the allergy develop specific antibodies known as Immunoglobulin (IgE) which react to peanut proteins. This triggers the release of histamine along with other chemicals which causes the airways, throat and lungs to constrict, causing breathing difficulties and the blood pressure to drop to threatening levels.

Other reactions that can occur are swelling of the eyes, lips or face, hives or rash, itching, abdominal pain, and nausea.

How Peanut Allergies Might Occur

Studies have indicated that there might be a link to peanut allergies an breast feeding. Women who are pregnant or breast feeding are encouraged to eliminate peanut products from their diet. It is believed that the peanut proteins flow into the breast milk causing infants to develop the allergy antibodies.

Children should not be introduced to peanuts within the first 3 years of life.

Exposure to Peanuts

Exposure to Peanuts can occur from 3 sources

1. Direct Contact-This involves eating peanuts or products containing peanuts.

2. Cross Contact- Cross contamination due to unintentional mixing of product pieces during the processing, manufacturing and handling process.

3. Inhalation-Coming in contact with peanut products as a result of inhaling dust or aerosols containing peanuts such as a cooking spray, peanut flour or peanut oil.
