Books, Books, Books
In the United States, maybe other countries too, most children have way more toys than they need. But, how many of those same children don't have a bookshelf they can access. If there are a few books in the house they are put up to "keep them nice". Books should be available for the children to pick up when they want a little quiet time. They will look at the pictures, tell their own story, or 'read' it to a younger sibling.
Great books for a summer read -
for those young but growing older or the young at heart.
"Stealing Princes", "Pulling Princes", and "Dueling Princes" highlight the high school years of Calypso Kelly who was an American teenager finding herself in a British All-girls boarding school. The humor comes from some cultural differences, some just growning up, and some some of Calypso's imagination.
These are fantastic books to keep imaginative minds busy and wanting to read even more. Great for poolside, in the shade of a nice tree, or chilling out in the air conditioning.

Reading connects the Generations
Let them read their own mail!
Mail always fasinates children- something with their own name on it is great. Think now for holiday presents.
Pop-UP and Pull tab Books a Lasting Favorite
Some specialty books need supervision or older fingers.
One example of a Pull-tab, Pop-Up book that we love is "The Honeybee and the Robber" by Eric Carle. This book has a special paper engineering team of James Roger Diaz, Tor Lokvig, and John Strejan. It takes much more effort than just a two dimentional book.
This book is a favorite for my Grandchildren because their 'BeePaw' has a hive of bees and the older - a grandson- has gotten to watch him work with the bees. He even has his own 'bee hat' now so he can help. Each page of this book as an action component. Al the while it is teaching valuable information about the life of honey bees. Mr. Carle follows the illustrated story with a couple pages with expanded facts and references each page with that information. It is a great book for all ages.
When was your last visit to your public library?
A good habit for all children - Visit the library often.
A Chill has set in - is Winter back?
These are sites that are geared to getting kids excited about reading. guysread.com is truly for guys, young and old. Encourages them to find new books, tell others about their favorite book, and interact. The special thing - it is all guys, just for guys. The books have lots of adventure and action.
The second site is bookadventure.com. It is created by Sylvan Learning. The good part is you don't have to be a Sylvan customer to use their reading list or interactive games. They even provide certificates for you to use as a reading program reward. Nothing better to get kids reading than a little incentive. The games and book selection have a wide range in subject and age.
The third site is teenreads.com and as I see it is geared toward teen girls. Really an age that sometimes is a challenge to find interesting but appropriate books. Teenreads.com offers contests, free things, reviews and a chance for the teens to get in on doing reviews. I find it a very inspiring site.
It will warm up, actually it will get hot and we will wish for these cool days. You know, most of us are very hard to satisfy. Then you can take that good book to the beach, the shade tree, or the air conditioned escape. Check out these sites, if you don't have any youth or teens share the sites with someone who does. Create new book lovers.
Reading Rainbow has been a Favorite for Years
