Take A Kid Fishing!

Fishing Is Good For Kids

As a fisherman, I worry about so many kids in this country missing out something that kids used to take for granted - fishing. There are many reasons for this. There are less Americans living in rural communities. Broken homes, without father figures, hurts. Fishing often loses out to organized activities. Most people today live hectic lives, each day scheduled down to the hour - even in summer when kids use to live in the moment, kicking a can to the next adventure. Parents today are often worried, maybe too much so, about all the bad things that can happen to a kid. Not long ago, for most of us around my age it was "be home by dark."

Anyway, enough about all that.

Take a kid fishing - even if he or she's not your's.

Take time out to explore the area. Watch for turtles. Point out beaver dams. Catch a crawfish.

Leave the Fancy Fishing Tackle at Home

If the kid is young - say 12 or younger leave all the fancy fishing tackle at home. Stop by the bait shop and ask for cane poles, a small float, number 8 wire hooks, bb shot and a spool of 8 lb test line. Press the bb shot about 6 inches above the hook. Adjust the float for depth.

Don't forget to buy a can of worms if you can't dig some the day before.

All that shouldn't set you back more than $15 - $20 and most of it you can use on your next trip.

Kids had generally rather catch a lot of smaller fish, like bluegills and crappie, fast than spend a day trying to catch a lunker (and maybe not catching anything.) Some of those panfish can put up quite a fight.

There is a lake suitable for fishing within a few hours - usually a lot less - of anywhere in this country.

In most parts of the U.S, summer is the best season for this time of fishing, but warm spring and fall days are also good.

Take a camera, but the memories will last a lifetime.

Try to find fishing holes close to home. Kids want to get there fast and get home in a hurry.

It's nice to have a handy fishing hole for spur-of-the-moment trips.

Take your kids to the bait shop. They will enjoy the crickets and minnows.

They would really get a kick out of owning their own tacklebox.
