Two of My Favorite Costumes
Two of my favorite costumes when I was a child were Princess Lea (I don't think I spelled that right - sorry Star Wars fans) and the year I was a cat.
I think the year I was a cat was probably so cool to me because it was the first year I mostly did the costume all by myself. I loved dressing up in costumes, but, I usually had a lot of trouble concocting them on my own. I even remember when I thought of it - how funny! I was standing outside my house on the front sidewalk and my mom was out there talking to one of her good friends. And all of a sudden, the idea just came to me! I was so excited!
I took gymnastics at the time, so I had a leotard and tights - and yep, they were black. That was the main part of my costume - and then I somehow affixed a tail to the backside. I taped two triangles of construction paper to a headband for the ears. And I remember dotting my face with a black marker for the start of the whiskers, but, I don't remember how I actually did the whiskers. Hmmm...
It was really very simple, but, I sure did love that costume!
The Princess Lea one - my mom helped quite a bit with that one. She gave me a beautiful white dress of hers to wear. (What was she thinking?!) And if you'll remember, back in the early 80's, the gold chain belts were all the rage. She let me wear that, too! Crazy! I don't remember if I wore it 'correctly' or if there was some super cool 'Star Wars' way to wear it - heehee! I had long hair which worked perfectly for my mother to do up the two side buns the Princess was so famous for back then! I loved it - and I remember feeling so glamourous. Except, of course, for the frustration of dragging and stepping on that durned gold belt the whole way trick-or-treating! HAHA!

With the new Elmo doll coming out in time for Christmas this will be one of the most sought after Halloween costumes for little ones on the sidewalk this year. This, as well as, Curious George, scarecrow and little puppies, are the most popular Halloween costumes for little ones on the market now that can be worn by both boys and girls.
There are many Halloween costumes for toddlers out on the market right now. Here are a few things to look for when picking out the costume for your toddler:
1. If it is a Halloween costume for toddlers, then it should be free of small parts such as miniature swords or small trinkets attached with thread.
2. Make sure that the costume fits properly. Many times costumes will get bunched up around the ankles and feet of a little toddler and cause them to trip or get caught on porch steps.
3. Always make sure that the material of the costume is flame retardant. Many jack o' lanterns have open flames inside that could easily catch a costume on fire.
Hopefully, with a little common sense and knowledge of what the trendy Halloween costumes for toddlers are right now, your little one will stand out from the pack. But remember now is the time to be looking for Halloween costumes for little ones - don't be late or your child might have to wear last year's Blue's Clues costume.

Safe Halloween Costume Ideas
Here are a few pointers when thinking about your costume:
First, make sure that the costume does not drag on the ground. It would be easy to trip or have someone step on a cape or gown causing an accident.
Secondly, make sure that if a mask is worn that the eyeholes are large enough to allow for clear vision.
Third, make sure that there is adequate ventilation in order to breathe within the costume.
These are just a few safe Halloween costume ideas.
Okay, so now you have your safe Halloween costume idea. Great! Now comes the time to consider what you should do with that idea. Here are a few things you may want to keep in mind while constructing or going out to buy, a safe Halloween costume.
1. Make sure you can be seen. One safe Halloween costume idea is to put reflective tape on the costume. For example: if your daughter wants to go as a pretty princess, make a tiara that reflects light or use a sash with stars cut out of reflective tape.
2. Choose a costume that is flame retardant. Many people have pumpkins with candles stuffed inside.
3. If using face paint make sure it is nontoxic and hypoallergenic.
4. If you just have to have that super long sword or axe, make sure it is made of a flexible material. Another safe Halloween costume idea is to make these items out of foam and wrap them in tape. This will make them stiff yet they will bend if you should fall on it.
So have fun this Halloween season. Just remember that when designing your costumes that you use some of the safe Halloween costume ideas. It will help ensure that you and your family stay safe and have a wonderful time.
