It's a great post. Loved every post of it. Role playing is one of the amazing activities which allow the children to explore their horizons through understanding and imagination.

    Cheers!

This is an excellent lens. Roleplaying doesn't deserve the negative rap it has received and it is so good when people stand up and show the world how wonderful it is!

Hi Brandon, thanks for stopping by to comment. It's great to hear from someone who grew up around gaming, and had a great time doing it.

Hi I am a 12 year old who grew up with a family of gamers. It has been a great experience for me.

Even though i am doing this right now, why not a gifted role play? Have teens and have them go to a school. I know things older than i am! I play on a chat website and they have roleplays! Well consider my idea!

This lens is very well done--

The idea that rpgs are a place where kids (and everyone really) can be in total control of their actions and experience consequences of those actions without being in any actual danger is also a key benefit that I really hadn't considered before.

Hi Jay, I think it's great to go back to spending individual time with our children instead of technology being the babysitter. Thanks!

Hi Rebecca, thanks for the tip! Every roll for her is a good one, regardless of what the result is or even if it goes behind a couch, so we're not stressing the outcome so much as just having fun with rolling the dice.

Hi Jay, thanks for the valuable tips and resources about Parenting. Awesome job! 5 stars indeed.
  • Rebecca Jul 3, 2007 @ 1:53 pm | delete
Under the paragraph on fuzzy dice you wrote "...exclaim about the good roll she made". I strongly recommend that you research the impact of parents' various responses on our children. Research supports the belief that praise should encourge process, rather than outcome. Good luck in your search.

I played RPG games around a table with friends from the age of 18 to 23 and one thing I'd like to add to this wonderful Lens is that role-playing keeps our imagination strong and allows us to experience a freedom we may not normally be able experience in real life.

Great Lens Jay, and what a fantastic idea. Not only are you teaching the kids moral values, but you're also bonding with them and expanding their imaginations temendously. You should open up a "Role Playing Center For Troubled Youths." 5 Stars
  • bettyrefour May 14, 2007 @ 8:34 pm | delete
I think roleplaying is great. Gives an opportunity to see what they're thinking and how they would react to different situations. Great lens.

  • JayShaffstall May 14, 2007 @ 5:06 pm | delete
Gareth, glad to hear you and your kids enjoy the roleplaying! Even when the baddies win, that's a statement on the consequences of their character's actions. Moral guidance doesn't mean the good guys always win, but that actions have consequences.

    Have fun!
  • Gareth May 14, 2007 @ 4:39 pm | delete
I have two kids 3(m) and 7(f) we roleplay all the time. Never planned by me it always come from them. My imagination kicks in when they come up with the ideas but I have never used it as an opportunity for moral guidance, it is fantasy - I find this overly analytic - sometimes the baddies win!
  • surinders May 14, 2007 @ 12:51 pm | delete
Jay, that was excellent lens and I do believe that role playing is the best way to connect to the kids and of course the learning process is just natural. Apart from this it is an excellent way to pass on moral values which are must in these times when we all are busy with our lives.
    Cheers.

Excellent lens, and a really great idea!
  • JayShaffstall May 12, 2007 @ 9:06 pm | delete
Younger kids do take naturally to roleplaying. They tend to do it automatically! Teens have been under enough social pressure you're probably right they'd not react well to the idea if they'd never been exposed to it before.
  • the777group May 12, 2007 @ 7:56 pm | delete
    Jay,

One think about role playing games that you may care to consider is the age that you introduce it to kids. I think my teen kids might think it kinda creepy.

On the other hand, role-playing with youngsters could a be great learning tool.

Cheryl, glad you found the lens! Sorry about beating your to the punch, but I think it's great that a Mom so interested in child safety is also into roleplaying with kids.

It's too bad I didn't know about the Future DM creeper when my daughter was an infant. She'd have had at least one!
