10) Rounding off the top: The Animaniacs!
Their jingle still plays in my head.

Who couldn't love these wacky, crazy cartoons in this 90s television show?! Not only were they funny, but they also had some pretty educational stuff on the show. Lessons ranged from history to geometry. But really, they were just hilarious. The mischief the three would get into would send me straight into laugh land. I think I also fell in love with Dot... but that's a story for another day (she broke my heart). Plus, Pinky and the Brain started their world domination scheming from this cartoon!... One is genius, while the other's insane!
Facts you never knew about The Animaniacs
- Produced by Stephen Spielberg
- There was a lot of controversy because of some of the adult nature and suggestive innuendoes throughout the show
- The fanbase was not only kids. More than 1/5 of viewers were 25 and up

9) Don't get too angry about The Angry Beavers!
Not that you could get mad at them in this 90s television show.

These animated little beavers made a dam in my life very quickly. After an episode, I was hooked to the screen and wanted my parents to go out and buy me a beaver. Unfortunately they thought I was talking about a stuffed toy, which I had to content myself with. Anyways, the show circled around Norbert, the smart beaver, and Daggett, the ADHD riddled and less intelligent beaver. This show too had a pretty big adult following as well as a good backing of children. I myself idolized Norbert and wanted to be a smart little beaver when I grew up. I think I've accomplished it.
Angry Beavers Intro
Controversy!
The Angry Beavers also found themselves in a scandal when one of their episodes bleeped out the word shut from "Shut up, Dag!" because someone said it sounded to much like another word that has to do with poop. This lead viewers to believe that the sentence meant something else, when it really didn't.

8) Take a chomp out of Street Sharks!
Forget Flipper, gimme Jaws!

This was one of the best shows of the 90s that was all about four kids who get captured and turned into sharks, who then have to try and turn themselves back while dealing with the fact that everyone thinks they are blood-thirsty predators. I mean, I don't exactly blame them. After all, sharks are pretty scary in the water so imagine them walking?! That didn't stop me from collecting all their action figures and playing with them for hours. My favorite was always the light blue with the purple stripes.
Sharks vs. Turtles
Streets Sharks was known to take a few jabs at the Ninja turtles. This is especially noted in their obvious dislike of pizza, which is a favorite of the turtles.
Some Jawsome Merchandise!
7) Get ready to get stoned: Gargoyles
No pun intended.

I still watch this to this day, it was one of those 90s television shows that never seems to have died. It ran from October 24, 1994 to February 15, 1997 and contributed to some of my best years. It was a bit darker than most other cartoons out at the time, but it still drew in a massive following. The show focused around a family of gargoyles that would turn to stone every day and come to life at night (like every other gargoyle, duh). They end up being cursed to stay stoned (again, no pun intended... it's just so easy!) until their castle rose above the skies. Fast forward to present day New York where they get bought and moved to a skyscraper high above the clouds. They awaken and the saga begins.
To Gargoyle, or not to Gargoyle?
The show was heavily influenced by Shakespeare's Macbeth and A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Gargoyle it up.

6) A little bit of sugar and spice: The Powerpuff Girls!
Representing the whole spectrum of hair colors!
I'm pretty sure we all know the three kick-butt femme fetales that inspired girls all around the world to high-kick their enemies? Yep, I'm talking about Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles. The first Powerpuff girls were actually created by Craig McCracken who started them off as The Whoopass Girls for an animation festival. It was then sent to Hanna-Barbera's where they were redubbed the household name they have now. And since then, the Powerpuff girls not only killed it on their own 90s television shows but they also gave cartoon network some of their best ratings!
I guess now would be a good time to say that Buttercup also rejected my advances. An Animaniac and a Powerpuff girl, both crossed off my list.
One person; Two voices
The voice of Buttercup was done by Tara Charendoff-Strong who also voiced Baby Dil from the Rugrats!

5) Are You Afraid of the Dark?
I know I sure as hell was.
This was one of the scariest of the 90s television shows. It gave me the biggest creeps, and most of the time I would immediately change the channel as soon as I heard the words "Are you". They could have been asking if I was wanting a million dollars and I still would have changed the channel. But I know there were far braver kids out there than I was and I know that this show was a pretty big milestone. I do remember one episode where the kid put on a mask which melded in with his face. Traumatizing stuff.
This is still too intense for me to watch.
Fairy tale endings for this kids show - 90s edition.
Almost all of the episodes focused on having a happy ending. There's always a rainbow after a thunderstorm after all.

4) It's talking babies: Rugrats!
Diapers were in back then.

Who didn't love the Rugrats? These little mischievous kids were the icons of my generation and set up a massive brand behind them. It ran for more than 10 years (August 11, 1991 to June 8, 2004) and created some awesome memories for kids everywhere. The little toddlers didn't actually start off being so popular. In fact, it wasn't until 1994 when the show took a hiatus and Nickelodeon just played repeats every day that people began noticing. And then from 1995 to 2000, Rugrats was the highest rated kid shows in the 90s on the network. And they still have appeal! My best friend actually has Reptar painted on his wall in his college apartment. You would think this wouldn't be a way to attract girls, yet all the Buttercups and Dots flock over. It's disgusting at times.
Long live the babies!
Rugrats still holds the title as Nicktoon's longest running cartoon. Spongebob Squarepants will surpass this mark when it airs it's 173rd episode on February 27, 2012.

3) Get ready to morph: The Power Rangers!
Caused many a bruise on my aunt from me "acting" as a power ranger.

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was every little boy's go-to cartoon and action figure. You wanted to look tough? Then bring in your new action figure and launch it, or rather play with, the other kids at school. The original series ran from 1993 to 1995 and spawned new spinoffs every year after that. It was packed with action and massive explosions. I mean explosions happened for everything! The pink ranger would breathe too hard and BAM, an explosion. It was awesome and kicked the butt of other 90s television shows.
Dramma for your Momma
David Yost, who played the original Blue power ranger, said he left the series because of how homophobic everyone was on the set.

2) More than meets the eye: Transformers Beast Wars
Robots in disguise!
One of my all time favorite shows, Transformer: Beast Wars is by far the best transformers out there. Who cares about Shia LaBeouf or Megan Fox (well maybe Megan Fox, just a little). It's all about the classics, and Transformers 3 can't touch the old cartoons. Beast wars wasn't actually the original transformers which had cars and bikes instead of rhinos and raptors. But I was always a huge fan of animals and dinosaurs so Beast Wars was a given favorite for me.

1) Gotta catch em all: Pokemon!
Caught the first spot all right.

Pokemon. The big kahuna of cartoons. The mother of television. The creator of dreams. Ok, so I'm going a little too far. But you have to admit, Pokemon set the bar for television shows, and that bar hasn't been changed since. The whole franchise exploded onto the scene, and to this day I am still tempted to whipp out a gameboy and start training some pokemon. Charizard, you will always be my favorite.
The king of the list and of the wallet.
Pokemon is second only to Mario as the franchise to have generated the most sales in the history of video games. And that's just including video games. Imagine adding up all the other merchandise Pokemon sells!

What an amazing journey.
Thank you so much for coming on this journey down memory lane with me. Making this lens brought me back to my childhood and certainly was one of the funnest lens I've had the pleasure of making. It was also one of the hardest! Narrowing down the top ten kids shows - 90s style was no easy task, and I'm sure I've missed a ton (Doug, Hey Arnold, All That, just to name a few). So please, leave a comment with your favorite kids show from the 90s! Or just leave a comment saying hi, whichever works :)

- I was huge on TMNT, Transformers, Animaniacs, Tiny Toons... I can't even remember them all right now. Cartoon were so much better back in the 90's... although I think we could have done without Power Rangers... I just was not a fan of them lol.
