Kudos To Some Kiddos

There are millions of kids in North America. Some are contented just to sit in front of the TV or video games and spend their free time that way.

But there are others that are driven to do something to help others in this world.
And this lens is to give a blue ribbon to a few of them to celebrate their social
conscience.

Another Inspiring Young Boy

"More than one million children are homeless in the United States. To highlight the problem, eleven-year-old Zach Bonner walked hundreds of kilometers from his home city of Tampa, Florida to the U.S. Capitol, in Washington, DC. Along the way, Zach helped out at shelters for the homeless. In this week's installment of our series, Making a Difference."

Kids For Clean Water

Ragen Elementary's Kids Are Budding Entrepreneurs

Bravo to these great budding entrepreneurs who saw a need and found a solution.

From The Global WaterChallenge website "We visited Ragen this March and saw how a little investment can make a huge difference. The schools program provided water infrastructure and education about water safety. The students were inspired to start a "health club" to share what they had learned and track student health and attendance.

The results? Attendance is up, families are healthier, and Ragen is the number one academic school in the district!

When they discovered they could purify enough water for the entire school for only $16 a year, they took matters into their own hands and started a vegetable garden. The students hope that sales from their garden will earn them enough to buy WaterGuard, which keeps their water clean all year round."

Entrepreneurial Students Get Clean Water for Their School

The young entrepreneurs at Ragen Elementary in Kenya discovered that they could purify the entire school's drinking water for only $16/year. To pay for it, they started a garden to sell vegetables to the local community.

Free The Children

According to their website "Free The Children is the world's largest network of children helping children through education, with more than one million youth involved in our innovative education and development programs in 45 countries. Founded in 1995 by international child rights activist Craig Kielburger, Free The Children has a proven track record of success. The organization has received the World's Children's Prize for the Rights of the Child (also known as the Children's Nobel Prize), the Human Rights Award from the World Association of Non-Governmental Organizations, and has formed successful partnerships with leading school boards and Oprah's Angel Network."

Here is an example of what it is all about.
It is unbelievable what a group of young students can do when they join their efforts for a common cause. In this case, the students of broward Conty concentrated on raising money to build schools in Kenya for the non-profit Free the Children. And raised money they did,.It added up to $93,450.14 -- enough to build 11 schools in Kenya.

Broward County students raised enough money to build 11 schools thousands of miles away in Kenya.

by Toan Lam, published on Huffington Post, July 25, 2009

Little Phoebe, from San Francisco, California has a big heart. That's an understatement. Actually, her kindness and compassion is bigger than most grown ups I've crossed paths with while reporting TV news for nearly a decade.

It started off with a simple question by Phoebe, an adorable little girl with long brown locks, peach-colored cheeks and big doe eyes

Ryan's Well

Ryan Hreljac, at 6 years of age, was inspired by lessons learned in his grade 1 class about children who don't have clean water around the world.

Now, over 10 years later, his message has reached around the globe and he continues to work towards his dream of clean water for all through the work of the Ryan's Well Foundation.

Ryan was just six years old when he learnt that not everybody in the world has access to clean water. Desperate to help, he worked day and night to save enough money for a well to be dug in drought-stricken Uganda. His ambition soon grew and his altruistic nature dragged schoolmates and ultimately most of Canada with him. An uplifting and wonderfully touching story that reminds us all that we can change the world if we really believe.

Such a nice topic - this deserves a lot of exposure, especially since we hear so much bad stuff kids do, when in reality there are more nice kids than misbehaving ones. Good to see the good kids getting some recognition.
