Wisconsin Boy Saves Grandma's House From Foreclosure

undefinedBy ALYSSA NEWCOMB

Feb. 8, 2012

The cost of renovations to a century-old home that has been in the family for three generations brought a Wisconsin woman perilously close to eviction, until her 12-year-old grandson stepped in.

"I wasn't even sure I was going to make it," Noah Lamaide said of his fundraising effort.

The budding philanthropist raised $10,500 in the course of a month, saving his grandmother's Stevens Point home from a scheduled auction date of Feb. 15.

Families helped by Jeneece's birthday gift

undefinedJeneece Edroff has something big to unwrap Saturday, in celebration of her 18th birthday.

That's when the ribbon will be cut and the doors opened at the aptly named Jeneece Place, which has been built as much from her drive and determination as wood, concrete and drywall.

"It will be a combination of an opening and a 'Happy Birthday' to Jeneece," said her mother, Angie.

Snowy weather this week led to the postponement of the opening from today.

Ground was broken on the $5.5-million, 10,500 square-foot "home away from home" last April.

Evan Moss, 7-year-old with epilepsy, has his first book-signing Sunday

There is much about 7-year-old Evan Moss that is not exceptional. He is in constant motion. He can speak endlessly about Pokemon. He thinks the cartoon "Phineas and Ferb" is, "like, hilarious."

But Evan Moss also has epilepsy and suffers from severe, possibly life-threatening seizures. And when he found out that there was a type of specially trained dog that can detect seizures and act to help him, Evan had the idea to write a book to help raise the $13,000 needed to buy such a dog.

So then he wrote and illustrated "My Seizure Dog," now available on Amazon.com. He will have his first book-signing at a Fairfax County coffee shop Sunday, and there just might be a large crowd there.

Young Man invention for science fair could stop germs

When Grant Edwards sees a heap of roller-skate wheels, a towel ring and a singing-toothbrush battery, he doesn't think garbage. He thinks invention.

Grant, 17 and a home-schooled senior who lives in south Charlotte, has had a knack for creating contraptions since he was a child.

But his most recent gadget took him to State University of New York Oswego for the 2011 Global Environmental Issues U.S (GENIUS) Olympiad competition in June, where he was awarded gold and a most-innovative prize for his self-sterilizing doorknob.

Sisters Help Raise Money For The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation

Each day, Maddie and Ashley McFeeley wake up, get dressed, inject themselves with insulin, eat breakfast, check their blood sugar and head to school.

Since they were toddlers, the twins have learned to live with Type 1 diabetes. Ashley developed diabetes first, when she was 1 1/2, and because the two are identical twins, doctors closely monitored Maddie, who became diabetic at 2 1/2. Ashley described Type 1 diabetes as when "your pancreas doesn't produce the insulin that you need. It doesn't disintegrate the sugars as well as it would if you had the insulin."

Kids For Clean Water

Ragen Elementary's Kids Are Budding Entrepreneurs

Bravo to these great budding entrepreneurs who saw a need and found a solution.

From The Global WaterChallenge website "We visited Ragen this March and saw how a little investment can make a huge difference. The schools program provided water infrastructure and education about water safety. The students were inspired to start a "health club" to share what they had learned and track student health and attendance.

The results? Attendance is up, families are healthier, and Ragen is the number one academic school in the district!

When they discovered they could purify enough water for the entire school for only $16 a year, they took matters into their own hands and started a vegetable garden. The students hope that sales from their garden will earn them enough to buy WaterGuard, which keeps their water clean all year round."

Free The Children Is A Fabulous Non Profit

According to their website "Free The Children is the world's largest network of children helping children through education, with more than one million youth involved in our innovative education and development programs in 45 countries. Founded in 1995 by international child rights activist Craig Kielburger, Free The Children has a proven track record of success. The organization has received the World's Children's Prize for the Rights of the Child (also known as the Children's Nobel Prize), the Human Rights Award from the World Association of Non-Governmental Organizations, and has formed successful partnerships with leading school boards and Oprah's Angel Network."

Here is an example of what it is all about.
It is unbelievable what a group of young students can do when they join their efforts for a common cause. In this case, the students of broward Conty concentrated on raising money to build schools in Kenya for the non-profit Free the Children. And raised money they did,.It added up to $93,450.14 -- enough to build 11 schools in Kenya.

Here is a new story which caught my attention this week:

There is nothing remarkable about the two-classroom school in Marialapa. It is only partially covered with tin roofing, only partially walled with palm thatch cover, only partially furnished with broken crooked benches and beaten blackboards, and led by two unqualified local teachers who each teach two classes at the same time. Yet, this is school for some 75+ children from the surrounding hills.
In Haiti, less than 10% of schools in our region are government schools, and all schools, whether government run or private, require students to pay a fee to attend. This poses a problem for many families who simply can't afford to pay for tuition and other associated costs.

Broward County students raised enough money to build 11 schools thousands of miles away in Kenya.
