Beware of the Flower

This is a totally silly lens without much redeeming value, but... well... anyway.

I saw this little guy in a greenhouse in Carpinteria, California, and just had to take his portrait. Worse, I had to put him on a T-shirt and a few other items. I don't know why, I just think flowers with faces are hilarious.

So if you want a humorous gift for someone that I guarantee will be utterly unique, check out The Flower With 'Tude Shop. The caption on the T-shirt reads, "HEY! Who d'ye think ye're calling PANSY?!!!"

Since this little guy would be pretty lonely by himself, below I've gathered a brief anthology of vegetable and floral humor from around the net.

Close-Up of the "Flower With 'Tude" Design:

Hey, Who D'ye Think Ye're Callin' PANSY?!!

Caption on T-shirt and other gifts:

"HEY! Who D'ye Think Ye're Callin' PANSY?!!"

Goofball Vegetable Humor Book

Perhaps this person was also traumatized by having a mother who was a green thumb AND an artist, and who was always making little people on the kitchen counter out of the tomatoes, squashes, and string beans we brought in from the garden.

I had to get this book for her as a Christmas present, of course. It shows you how to make odd-looking faces and animals out of fruits and vegetables already around the house. (No, I'm not talking about your spouse.)

Funny Flowers and Vegetables Around the Net

I can't be the only person who sees faces in flowers, can I?

I donno, but there's some pretty silly stuff out there.
"Weird Fruit" by Renowned Fantasy Artist Ursula Something Or Other
I love this web artist, UrsulaV, even if I still don't know her last name. She can do really exquisite fantasy art. She can also do really stupid yet funny art. Here is her gallery of Weird Fruit. My favorite is "Bighorn Pears".
Bob the Angry Flower
Obviously I couldn't skip this guy. Famous comic strip flower tackles the burning issues of our day.
Wearable Vegetables - Odd Gifts
In addition to "wearable vegetables", this guy sells T-shirts with really awful vegetarian puns.
OEDIPUS, with Vegetables
No, I'm not kidding. It's an 8 minute dramatic production of the Greek tragedy Oedipus (by Sophocles, for the geeks out there) using vegetables as actors. It was featured at the Sundance Film Festival and got assistance from Industrial Light and Magic.

Pareidolia -- Seeing Faces in Inanimate Objects

Aha! I'm Not Alone in My Insanity!

I was searching the web for other photos of flowers with faces, and not having much luck. I found plenty of pictures, but they were all clip art and other kitsch in which people created flowers with smiley faces on them. That doesn't count!

But finally I stumbled across a blog entry explaining the phenomenon of "Pareidolia", seeing faces in inanimate objects. The article is actually pretty funny and has a cute example.

Armed with a jargon word to assist me in my search, I was finally able to find other photos proving that I'm not the only crazy person out there:

I'm A Lonely Little Petunia in an Onion Patch

Because Petunias Need Love Too

Imogen Heap recently re-popularized this old ditty, but she only sang the first line of the chorus, which goes like this:

I'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch
and all I do is cry all day
Boo hoo, boo hoo
The air's so strong it takes my breath away (Phee-ew)
I'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch,
oh won't you come and play with me!

It's actually an excerpt from a longer song written in 1946 by Maurie Hartmann, Billy Faber and Johnny Kamono.

Amazingly, I've found an obscure website with an original recording of "Lonely Little Petunia in an Onion Patch" with all the verses and all the lyrics. Sounds of a bygone era! There, now you've found something on the net you never knew existed.

I'm a Lonely Little Petunia

This song is originally sung by Imogen Heap. This is just a classic little lullaby.

Wow! I'm fascinatined by this Pareidolia. I want to research it!! Do more creative people tend to see these things? My daughter is always seeing animals, faces, other object in wood grain, clouds, etc. I wonder if it's connected to a sense of imagination.

About Greekgeek

Graduate student with MAs in classics and mythological studies currently working on a PhD -- what a mouthful! -- I try to be a bard and storyteller for the modern world.

My lenses reflect my eclectic interests -- classical studies and mythology, depth psychology, art history, web design, teaching and humor, writing, computer graphics, and thoughtful ways to help the environment and the world. Oh yes, and baseball. Don't get me started on baseball.

My main lens, Ancient Greece Odyssey, traces my own journey through Greece after many years studying its ancient art, literature, myths and gods.

I create my lenses for several reasons -- to share my passions, to
teach, and to help pay for books and cat food. (The cat's name is Samhain... give yourself a pat on the back if you know what it means without googling it!)
